Re: BDS/Roll Away vs. Roll On

Just a quick comment on the value of supporting a big name. Duncans earlier post mentioned Aynsley Lister opening for Skynyrd this year, and how it meant he was playing in front of 20,000 people in the course of a few days rather than a few hundred people. I know Aynsley was happy with the response he got - he practically ran out of CD's to sell at the gigs, saw greatly increased traffic on his website, and many new members registering with his web forum. It also led to lots of new faces at his own gigs and requests coming in for Aynsley's music to be played on radio stations such as Planet Rock. Yes - many people do arrive "fashionably" late and miss the support, but it doesn't tend to happen at gigs with a standing audience, where folks arrive early to get the best spot.

As for Davy and HAB, well I guess those who attended the festival are entitled to shout loudest. But ask yourselves this - would you have still bought tickets and made the journey if Davy hadn't been billed to appear? For a double header of Bonamassa & Trucks? Had I had the funds and time available last summer, I think I would have been tempted enough by those two and the prospect of another gathering of the Bonamasses to join you.

Davy's a good kid from what I've seen of him, and as the Funky Doc says, making a bad decision doesn't make someone a bad person, so let's give him a break yeah? It's Christmas after all - peace, goodwill and all that stuff. wink

And Deezer - what's all this "kick-arse" music nonsense? Even us Brits say "kick-ass". tongue made me smile ya did!

Good point Ian,
I was going to that show for Joe. The fact that Derek was headlining was for me was just a big bonus, but I made the trek for Joe.  The true icing on the cake on that day was and in my mind still is communing with so many good people, aka us. Big Jeff is right we came from far and wide and even up close to be with each other and Joe. I even met Libby! Can you believe it? Got to chat with Rick and Carmine it just dosen't get any better. What a day!

Now,  leading up to the show when the bands were announced, I noticed that BDS was on the bill, well; I had never been impressed by them, don't get me wrong I tried on the recomendation of so many here, but they just didn't do it for me. So I figure well here is a chance to see if this guy has "it", we all know what happened. I have no emotional connection to BDS or thier music and chances are, unless something extrodinary happens, I never will.

So in closing on this subject, for me, for good, I for one did not miss BDS at the HAB, they could not have made that day for me any better than it was. I was with Joes' faithful that day and it just dosen't get any better. For those of you that enjoy BDS, God bless, enjoy.

A funny thing I've noticed about differing opinions online, the written word, is that they seem to go on forever. Its all good.  I also think that if we were all together that its quite possible that this conversation would have lasted all of 30 seconds:

Roy:  Hey Jack, what do you think of Back Door Slam?

Jack:  I think they suck.

Roy:  No way, they're great, did you know that Davy is a real nice guy?

Jack:  No.

Roy:  Well he is and I like him. You should give them another listen.

Jack:  Maybe.......Hey lets go get another beer.

Gee Fuzz, I never knew your name was Jack, but I would have bought another beer for you anyway even if you thought they sucked. wink

Anyway, I don't go to Davy's shows because he is a nice guy. I go to his shows to see a young man who can really play the guitar, has a great voice and writes some of the best music around today. And if you think I'm FOS, which could very well be, don't believe me at all. But when you're asked to open for Kid Rock, Gov't Mule, Jeff Beck and Chickenfoot all within a span of  one year, then I guess that has to say something. I didn't see Davy and Back Door Slam open for Chickenfoot, but I know Rev. Paul did. He told me that after the guys were done with their set, the line to buy their CDs and meet the band was darn near out the theatre door, or something to that effect.

But like I've always said, everyone is entitled to their own opinions without facing ridicule. At least I hope that's still the policy here.

Jim, you do make a good point about LLB. I'm not  really into their music athough, I knew they were a hot item a few years ago. Then, almost nothing. I almost wondered if they were still together until I saw an add advertising their appearance. Like you said, it's a marathon. smile

Roy

P.S. In my opinion, some other very nice guys: Joe Bonamassa, Albert Cummings, Walter Trout, Chris Duarte, Greg Koch, Eric Sardinas, Coco Montoya, Talan Latz, Wayne Baker Brooks, Oli Brown, Joe Moss, Adam Jones and the list goes on......

Joe is the Best!

To contrast Ian's point I ask you how far did you have to come? How far in advance did you have to get clearance from work? What if you had combined other aspects of time off too? How about hotels? Transportation? Airfares? Reservations for all of the above? What if BDS WAS the deal sealer because you had the chance to finally give them a proper listen among rank & file peers??? I'm all for seeing Joe Bonamassa it's well known, but I don't live in Europe where "some weekend" out of many I can get there more easily than in America. I'm all for seeing Derek Trucks, but I could catch him locally at some point (even though I missed him here, due to well well, I can see him at the HAB with Joe & that Davy guy's band they all been raving about).  Am I rankled, no, just thought a little different is all.  Frankly I would have passed on Joe & Derek except for I could not stand having gone all these years without being in the same concert audience with Jane Hall.  She was my more of my ultimate deal sealer, especially given her excitement and commitment-ooops, there, I said it again.  If it had been just about anywhere else... I put this to rest, but I call it strike one!

Re: BDS/Roll Away vs. Roll On

Rocket, had I been aware of your passion over this subject re; HAB I'd have picked you up & put you up w/ a free ticket for the SF show providing you could have made it up the coast that night. We had 2 no shows @ the 11th hour and my friend was givin' away the 2 tix. Even if it had been sold out you'd have gotten in, trust me. Davy averages 2-3 shows annually here in the Bay Area, so let's get yer smilin' face up here next time. Whathehell, if they play SoCal I'll hook you up.
