Great, but different show for sure. First it was as always a pleasure to hang out w/ my Bonabud Libby and finally get to meet her hubby Steve and Danny too. The show opened with Pete Anderson with a rousing set of his own style of blues, this guy can do it all, helluva player, producer, grammy winner and former driving force behind Dwight Yoakam. Dwight's career has suffered since parting ways with Pete for sure. The guitar comp. started and much to our pleasure the judges sat right in front of us. The judges were Kenny Wayne Shepard, Elliot Easton(The Cars& Creedence), Jimmy Vivino(Conan's band director), Hubert Sumlin(sittin' right in front of me), and Steve Lukather. The 5 finalists were all outstanding, but when Kirby Kelly, the oldest of the bunch played his dual slide style(one on his index finger & one on his ring finger) the judges were highly amused. I looked over Jimmy, Hubert, & Steve's shoulders and saw nothing but 9's & 10''s on their ballots, way higher than the previous two guys and knew who the winner was gonna be. Then Joe came on and not to far into his set started bringing out, as Joe called it, a cavalcade of stars to sit in. First was Lukather, then Jimmy and Hubert came on along with Elliot, and they closed out with Glenn Hughes. Glenn was interesting showing off his still dynamic pipes and playing style on bass that was pure Spinal Tap imagery. The highlight for me was enjoying my girlfriends Bonabaptism even though we didn't get a full dose of Joe, but she got to meet JB, Rick, and Bogie earlier in the afternoon, but you get Carmine in Hollywood and he's about impossible to nail down. As always Dave, Aaron, and Warren were takin' care of business as well as sharin' the love. I also sent Jimmy and Hubert home with a JB pick as a souvenir from the event. I offered one to Steve Lukather, but he said thanks, but I already have a few. Can't wait for March 12 to come around.
