Topic: Widespread Panic / Allman Brothers

There was some serious jamage going on at the Woodlands Saturday night.  Due to the early start, we missed Mark May opening up and most of Widespread Panic’s set.  But, as we walked into the Pavilion, Warren Haynes was joining the band for 2 great songs – “Use Me” and “Cortez the Killer”.  Both tunes were heavy with ultra extended grooves and perfect sound.  Warren Haynes’ ripping searing leads sent chills thru my body and Jimmy Herring’s guitar work was very nice indeed.  WP finished up with “Lawyers Guns & Money” and “Henry Parsons Died”, which both sounded great.  John Bell’s guitar and vocals were very interesting and Dave Schools laid down some heavy 6-string low end.

The Allman Brothers came out with a video celebrating their 40th anniversary and a tribute to Duane Allman, including a lot of old cool pictures.  The setlist went like this:
Revival
Done Somebody Wrong
Rocking Horse
You Don't Love Me
I Walk On Gilded Splinters
The Sky Is Crying
Franklin's Tower
Black Hearted Woman
Dreams
In Memory of Elizabeth Reed
- Encore
Southbound
They played like the legends they are, featuring amazing guitar work by Haynes and Derek Trucks.  The mix wasn’t quite a clear as WP, as Oteil’s bass kinda got lost.  But, the extended jams more than made up for the minor sound deficiencies.  Black Hearted Woman was mesmerizing.  Interestingly, Gregg Allman only sang a few songs and played basic rhythms on organ, as there was a very good keyboard player next to him throwing down the leads.  Overall, it was a very good show on a perfect clear cool evening in Houston.
