That was not the problem.  It wasn't the QB position.

Carson and McFadden carried the whole offense for the Raiders tonight.  That was the problem.

Carson made a lot of great throws.  In fact we probably would have scored a TD on the first drive, if Streeter didn't fumble the ball.  Carson led a great drive down the field just for it to be taken away with a bone-head play.  Hopefully Streeter will learn that it is best to go down if you have no where to go and all those Chargers around you. Take the first down, you had it.  Not the fumble.

No receivers.  Although I commend Hagan for his great effort. He was solid, especially with as little time to practice. He could be a good slot receiver for the Raiders.  Especially since we don't have much in TE.

Who knew how important a long snapper could be.  Poor Shane Lechler, that was about as fustrating as it could get.

Our defense coordinator should be commended.  They looked very prepared and played with passion and intensity.  Best tackling I have seen from them in a long time.  They are rebuilding the defense.
Good job.

But this staff inherited an explosive offense, so they had that from the start. So hopefully when they get the other 2 receivers back, it will give a much clearer picture of what the team really looks like.

I would like to see Marcel Reese more utilized like he was last season.  He's very talented and don't want him to be underutilized.  They need him more than ever, especially if Taiwan Jones can't get himself together. I do wish we still had Michael Bush. He was a big contributor.

I am hoping Terrelle can be the future of the Raiders.  He is very explosive and I hope he keeps getting better.  He says he has to work on his footwork in the passing game. He is exciting to watch.

And some of the protection on the edge was falling apart for the Raiders.  So hopefully, next game Condo will be back.  I guess he might be our most valuable player after tonight's folly.

Actually, you saw us without our receivers.  That has been a problem with the Raiders.  The team you saw tonight will hopefully not be the team you see next week.

We are not a one trick pony if Moore, Ford and Heyward-Bey can play together.  Also this offensive coordinator has to use Marcel Reese more in the offense.  We do have a deficiency at TE, but we do have one and if they use him more we might see another weapon.

Edit to add: Saw the coaches press conference.  Disagree with him highly in that they used Reese well in the San Diego game. Especially with our receivers hurt and RB Taiwan screwing around.  Coach Allen, don't make us a vanilla offense again. If he was used properly, McFadden would have had more rushing yards.  Coach Allen may want to change the blocking scheme, but he better use the talent as it's meant to be played, like last year.  Don't screw up our offense. We had a good one before you and Knapp got here.  Your scheme didn't work last night.

We had an explosive offense last year.  Hopefully they didn't hurt it to much with their new play calling. One thing they need to do with Carson is please keep the no-huddle.  That is one thing he does well. I didn't see any of that tonight, maybe cause of them just getting out the gate and injured receivers.

Congrats Rick,  They showed where they are honoring Junior Seau on your opening night and retiring his number.  He was a player every team would have loved to have.  Best wishes to his family and friends.

Re: The NFL - National Football League

I thought the Ravens looked @#&* hot last night! No surprise that the big names, Flacco, Lewis, Rice and Reed all had a great game. Ray Lewis dropped 25 lbs this summer by cycling 40 miles a day! Now that is dedication!

Ed Reed last night became the all time interception return yardage leader! Anyone know what kind of injury Suggs has?

Will now see highlights of what you left coasters have been talking about.

Thoughts on the general standard of the replacement refs?

Re: The NFL - National Football League

I personally think the refs are doing a great job.  If players can get a message, which seems to be play pretty, play fair, play in good sportsmanship (limited outrages and celebrations alike), I don't see a problem...with the refs, they ARE pros, perhaps lesser qualified...the problem is an unresolved collective bargaining agreement-the cornerstone of all "close to perfect" relationships of any kind is agreement.

Anyone honest will admit, no matter how great the perception of refereeing, highest calibeer or replacements, we will always find fault somewhere, sometime...usually at a critical juncture of an important game or season!  That is being a sports fan!

Seems the replacements are doing as well as the originals. There always will be wailing depending on whose ox is being gored, but I'll be happy with what is there now. I see no controversy.
GDawg, the first MNF game was good, the Raiders/Bolts was not so hot from either team. Both had a lot of starters out with preseason injuries and the game was not representative of either at their best. Chargers lacked their best RB, Raiders their best receivers. Plenty of dropped passes on both sides.

That's a great way to watch the Giants.  I know San Francisco is so excited now with there teams.
Great time to be in the City and enjoying the games there.  I could use some chowder in a bowl right now, yummy.

I hope you did get to see Terrelle in pre-season.  He looked great.  They say he is really working hard.
Plus you can never have enough back-ups in the NFL.

Look at us last night.  Our long snapper gets injured and the whole game fell apart.  It was almost watching the A's with grounders on the infield instead of anywhere close to a ball in the air.  The Raiders have to find a good back-up for Condo, in case he gets injured or retires. It was proven last night.  Maybe a new special teams coach while they are at it.

You can never have enough good back-ups.  Especially at QB. So it's important Terrelle stays as ready as he can be.  You never know when your number will be called. And I hear so many good things about his work ethic. So Yippee.  We have a new system so they are all having to learn new things.

What's great is the 3 QB's are helping each other.  Carson's focus has been more with teaching our young receiver corp. because of his experience.  It's a work in progress.  The one weapon Carson has is Mcfadden who is getting better every season.  I have seen him up his game to a new level every season.  He becomes smarter every year with each season he plays.

So enjoy your fun ride with the Giants. I'm still hoping for a miracle with the A's.
Take a ride on the Trolley and in your best Joe Walsh voice wink, sing "I left my heart in San Francisco".

I particularly enjoyed the aerial shots that showed home plate on the right side at the 50 yd line! big_smile You'd think that California (though supposedly bankrupt,) could afford separate baseball and NFL stadiums in the SF metro area. Seems kind of sad that they have to share.

Long snapper is a specialty position with many very good, though unsung players. A good one can enjoy a very long career in the NFL. Yes, we are broke out here.

They toil in anonymity. The Bears have had the best in the business for years...Patrick Mannelly. Outside of Chicago, hell...even in Chicago, most people have never heard of him. But if you polled NFL players, they'd tell you.

The A's desperately want out of the Coliseum and have been trying to get a new baseball only stadium. The first plan since new owner Lew Wolff took over was to build in Fremont, but that fell through. Next plan was San Jose, but we're all still waiting on Bud "the boob" Selig to make a decision as the Giants have marketing rights to the South Bay. Don't even ask, that's a very complicated situation compounded by Selig dragging his feet on the decision process. Latest rumblings are about trying to keep the team in Oakland in a stadium on the water adjacent to Jack London Square. Last, but not least, Kevin Johnson, former NBA & Cal basketball star and now Mayor of Sacramento is trying to get a sports complex off the ground to keep the NBA Sacto. Kings happy and Sacramento has tried to bring the A's to Sacto. for many years. The Raiders want a new stadium as well since the Oakland Coliseum is one of the last concrete "cookie cutter" design stadiums left just like Qualcom in San Diego. Reggie Jackson used to call it the Mausoleum back in his first stint in Oakland. If they ever implode it a lot of incredible concert memories will go with it from the Bill Graham Day On The Green shows.

Any excuse, eh Tom? tongue

A couple of quotes from John Madden (be prepared for more RG3 worship from this quarter as the season progresses) tongue -

"It’s darn near an impossible task to open up and play the Saints in their place,” Madden said during his weekly appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “I mean, no one wins down there, so I didn’t expect him to do anything like he did. But I did want to see him, and I wanted to see what he had.

“And at some point, I have to admit that I said this, it just came out, I said RGIII’s the best player in the NFL today. That’s what I really thought. Those words did come out. Now, I don’t know that I’m gonna live with that or back that up the rest of the season."

"You know, the thing that he did that was so amazing was he reminded me — and I don’t mean to throw names around — but he reminded me of a Tim Tebow that can pass." big_smile

Ok, it's that time again (it was last week too, but I forgot then) - who's gonna play? Remember that Bears-GB is tonight.

Minnesota at Indianapolis - 'All day' is back and running...
Oakland at Miami - An ugly tragi-comedy in the making?
Chicago at Green Bay - Hard to imagine GB losing two at home.
Kansas City at Buffalo - Grab a bottle, Tom. wink
Cleveland at Cincinnati - Toss up, I'll go for the home team.
New Orleans at Carolina - Can't imagine Saints losing their first two either.
Houston at Jacksonville - No idea, on a coin toss.
Arizona at New England - Lock of the week! No brainer.
Tampa Bay at NY Giants - Giants to bounce back.
Baltimore at Philadelphia - Go Ravens! cool
Washington at St. Louis - RGIII to continue to shine! cool
Dallas at Seattle - Could be very close.
NY Jets at Pittsburgh - Jets meet a real defense.
Tennessee at San Diego - Tough call, home team on a coin toss.
Detroit at San Francisco - Last year this was a fun one, I'll go with Niners.
Denver at Atlanta - I'll go with PM till he loses.
