Re: Who says Mayer can't play the blues?

Read your own asinine quote that I included and then come back and tell me again I'm missing the point.  Mayer's guitar solos are plagerized? Not only is that the most stupid thing I've read in this forum, but then out of the other corner of your mouth you're half-assed praising him.  My question is what's the purpose of your post other than to somehow pretend you know anything - which you don't.  My last post was only in response to your ludicrous claims.

Well, having read this...i suggest you a couple of things, which are in fact very necessary for you.

- Read again what i wrote before, because you definitely didn't understand. I was talking about something quite specific, and not questioning any of his most positive characteristics (like talent or song writing). half-assed praising him? roll .... believe what you want.

- Leave your fanatism behind and try to accept other non-fan opinion, specially a "negative" one. It seems you are the kind of fan who believes that a negative opinion is synonym of a non-constructive one. Of course, you are wrong.

If you really think mayer's style of soloing is 100% original...   roll    well... i mean...it's ok....

Re: Who says Mayer can't play the blues?

who can really say they have a 100% original style of soloing?  as far as i know, no one.  what does that even mean?

perhaps not 100%, but enough to define it. It's not fully a question of logic, but of hearing (or listening, don't know which would be the exact word) . That's why it's difficult to explain.

BB, both alberts, Benson, Buddy, Wes, Clapton, Freddie, Stevie Ray, Joe Pass, Eric Johnson, Gary Moore, Rory Gallagher, Django...

Those are some examples.

I like JM. He's got tons of talent. I listen to him in the car..great for long trips. The attitude comes from certain publications proclaiming him the "Greatest" Blues guitarist of his generation, and never mentioning Joe. But, that's not his fault.

JM threads tend to end up locked because the arguments get too heated. That's why it's always worthwhile to do a "Search" prior to creating a new thread. There is no wrong or right when it comes to what music one likes...period....

AND For fans of Johnny Lang...listen to Olie Brown...JL is one of his influences..

The discussion could have been much more controlled from Cuby's part. I think he felt touched by my comment.
That's the problem of arguing with fans. They have enough capacity to understand, the problem is they don't want to, and they will defend their artist no matter what is said.

My heroe and source of inspiration is Gary Moore... so? Most songs of "Blues Alive" have horrible solos...His performances at Montreux 99 and 01 were weak... and i could continue

Re: Who says Mayer can't play the blues?

Let's pump the brakes. Things like "he has/doesn't have his own voice" are so subjective it's really not worth an argument. "This guy doesn't have his own voice! He just copies others" That's really difficult to prove. "Yes he does! He has his own style!" That's difficult to prove either. I'll just leave this something Mayer himself once said. He basically said that he'll play what he wants to play, and that he feels validated by people like Clapton and King deeming him worthy, and leave it to the people on the message boards to duke it out.

Re: Who says Mayer can't play the blues?

John Mayer is one of those few artists that is successfully playing blues to young audiences. For that alone he get's my respect. My only criticism of his is that it's taking him a long time to release that next album of his, which will be very interesting to hear...

I think it means their style is personified by them, a signature if you will - that hasn't been perfected previously and has been a symbol of influence since...

•Eddie Van Halen (changed the trend of guitar market)
•Randy Rhoads (face-melting)
•Charlie Patton (early enough to be original)
•Billy Gibbons (texas)
•Hubert Sumlin (finger picking solos)

Charley Patton was the first great Delta Bluesmen in my opinion.

Re: Who says Mayer can't play the blues?

I know this was for the memorial and it was appropriate, but I hope JM doesn't get overrated for this performance.  People act like they haven't seen a guitarist play an instrumental before.

"Holy Toledo"  -  Bill King   "Just Win Baby" - Al Davis  "The Autumn Wind" - Steve Sabol

There's always a story with me.  A work friend of mine was talking about old school blues one day and the black/white thing that has changed over time, remarking that that was more to me than met the eye, but he could not put his finger on it.

We talked about Son House and Leadbelly and Charley Patton & Elmo James and Chester Arthur Burnett and Muddy Waters all being black and the newer guys all being white.  With a twinkle in my eye I asked if he had every seen a picture of Charley.  He said no, went online, found a pic, looked at me and was in stunned silence.  "Is this your grandfather?"

I howled and said I ain't telling...  He quietly said "I look African, but I have Caucasian and Cherokee in me, as well."
Yes I know it.  I care not a whit.  big_smile
