Re: The Football Topic

Well surprise surprise. Wolves sack Dean Saunders.

I think it must be generally accepted that the people who own and run Wolves are complete to****s. Saunders sackings only serves to confirm their absolute lack of qualifications to run a football club, or a corner shop for that matter.

I'm not a Wolves fan, but if I were it would be Morgan and Moxey's head I would want and not Dean Saunders. After McCarthy's sacking they interviewed extensively for 'the right man'. Alan Curbishley wisely backed out sensing something wasn't right and Steve Bruce got the nod, but then Wolves backed out! I bet Bruce is laughing all the way to the Prem now.

So they appoint Connor, who clearly probably wasn't ready for such a challenge as a stop gap and fall guy and end up sacking a long term loyal servant. Then comes Solbakken. He had just be sacked after a dismal period at Cologne which saw them relegated so he was a prime choice wasn't he? Don't they take any notice of what is going on?

So in come Saunders. Won 5, drew 5, lost 10. They were 18th at the time and a miserable bunch. It took him 10 games to get a win which says a lot for what he took over. In the circumstances 20 points for such a poor side probably isn't bad, but when Peterborough can get relegated having 54 points on the board, that says everything about the competitiveness of the division.

How can any managerial employee have any faith in the Wolves board? Of course, someone will take the job, but it is clear if they haven't taken at least 15 points from their first 7 games the guy will be looking over his shoulder. Impossible job I would say. Any manager worth his salt with a reputation would insist on a minimum 3 year deal with a hefty payout.

So they are starting again. I will be really interested to see who they appoint. It has got to be someone with real nous this time. Anything less and they will be staring at League 2 this time next year. What a shocking pair of muppets, or should that be M&M's?

Re: The Football Topic

You don't have to be a Manchester United fan or to be an SAF fan to laud the retirement of one of the greatest managers, if not THE greatest manager in the game.

His achievements will stand for all time and he is a living legend, thankfully.

He took over in '86 I think it was and endured difficult times. He was perilously close to a demise similar to that of Dean Saunders earlier in the week.

"After an eight-game spell in the league without a win during the 1989-90 season, reports suggested that if United lost to Nottingham Forest in their FA Cup third-round tie on 7 January 1990, Ferguson would be dismissed; Mark Robins scored the winner that went down as the "goal that saved Fergie" but the player believes it was a myth." (quote courtesy of the BBC)

He has been controversial, but then the most ruthless winners often are. You have to view the guy in the round. He is a winner. Single minded. Quick to claim the moral high ground at times, conveniently forgetting some of his own, and his teams indiscretions. But let that not tarnish his reputation. He is/was a man manager in that players seemed to know where they stood. Those that couldn't see it had a short shelf life.

I know of some fans of Uniteds, that even at the height of their dominance, still didn't think Ferguson was a good manager. That only goes to show that some fans don't know anything and will never be happy. Sure, no one is bigger than the club, but when a man like Ferguson IS the club I think fans have to be a little more objective.

As a West Ham fan I can only be envious. But then again he was envious of West Ham's ability to discover and develop talent. After all, he should know. he bought enough of them. Ince, Carrick, Ferdinand (via Leeds), and he tried to get a few more Cole, Johnson, Defoe. But he had no need to be. United's ability to turn out quality premiership standard players is pretty much unrivalled.

He has rebuilt United countless times combining British players with quality foreign imports. At times United have been the only top club whose teams have often been more than 50% made up of British players. He deserves credit for that. He deserves credit too for his dealings with the media. I shall always applaud his blackballing of the BBC as a result of comments made by the BBC's unctious Alan Green.

He leaves massive shoes to fill. You either go big with a big name or turn the whole thing on its head and give it to someone who doesn't have the 'big game' experience.

Mourinho must be favourite given this announcement, and to be fair he would do the job there. Of that I have no doubt. He also has recent experience of playing Munich who are set to be a dominant force over the next couple of seasons. For a publicly quoted company Mourinho has to be the choice.

But if they want someone of the character and integrity of the bloke who is retiring, then David Moyes...dour Scot...players man would be my choice. Sure, no league titles, no record of success, how can he stand against Mourinho? I don't know. But I would love to see him get it. No doubt he will be chuffed just to be even mentioned in the same sentence as the United job. Stranger things have happened.

Personally, I think it has to be Mourinho. United fans will be suspicious, but they needn't be. Jose is, underneath the flash and showbiz, all football. I don't rule out Louis Van Gaal though. The Munich we see today has been built on Van Gaal's team and they way they play today follows his thinking. Heynkes is claiming the credit, rightfully, just now, but Van Gaal was the original architect there.

What a way to bow out though. Champions by a mile. But only by a mile courtesy of Van Persie. Shrewd buy. But without his goals the championship winning margin would have been minimal. But thats what sets Ferguson apart from the rest. He knew what he needed and made sure the Glazers got it for him. Ruthless winner. Happy retirement.............

Re: The Football Topic

Hey let's not forget his achievements with Aberdeen FC (funny how English TV Channels forgot that)

30 years ago this Saturday we beat the mighty Real Madrid 2-1 in Gothenburg and we all got soaked!! A night never to forget and will never be repeated.

Re: The Football Topic

Fair point. Didn't mean any offence, after all it was his Aberdeen record that landed him the United job!

Can't speak about 'English' TV stations, although I wasn't aware of them. I thought the Beeb was British. Most of the reporting I have seen on the Beeb has reminded of his Aberdeen and St. Mirren managerial career.

Still, nice to see that the proverbial Scottish 'chip' is alive and well on your shoulder!

Now don't get riled.............I've lived in Germany for the last 10 years so I am the bloody 'Johnny Foreigner' anyway. Plus I still think that Archie Gemmill scored the finest World Cup goal.

There is a nice interview of SAF when he first landed the job on the pitch at Old Trafford. He comments that if the players he was taking over from Ron Atkinson were honest and prepared to work hard then 'they' as a group would do alright. Bit of an understatement there I would say. 'Alright' barely covers winning 39 major titles in 26 seasons. We'll miss his modesty for sure!

I was commenting in general Mike, not at your post, so there was no offence. But thanks for your comments. It was the ITV channel that seemed to concentrate on his Man Utd days only. Archie Gemmill's goal in the 1978 World Cup will take some beating.

I have been to 2 Bayern Munich home games in the past 2 years and the whole experience is incredible. Puts the Scottish game to shame.

The Sky programme that followed the game where Adebayo's twin brother played for Spurs last night covered a lot of the Aberdeen stuff which is probably as interesting if not more in terms of achievement than the Man Utd years and I mean no disrespect to his unequalled success there.

Re: The Football Topic

Well I for one delighted that Moyes has been handed the post. Perhaps that explains the speed with which it happened.  He was Ferguson's favoured choice and they must have got wind that with his contract up he wouldgo elsewhere.
Says a lot that Fergie would act in such a way to ensure that Moyes follows him.

I'm not a United fan but I am a Moyes fan and have been since his Preston days. His interviews told me all I needed to know. He is a winner and I want to see him succeed. That unfortunately means now that I want United to succeed as well. Strange logic but there you go. What makes football great is the history and Ferguson has played a huge role in making that. Moyes can continue that and I wish him all the best. He has done a great job at Everyone. Here's to him. United could have gone for guaranteed instant further success. Instead they have gone for the right kind of continuity. I applaud that wholeheartedly.

Funny, I've been explaining to German friends what this means and they get it. Munich have had about 5 managers in 8-9 years. Always more success, but they appreciate that someone who has had 26 years of success must be pretty special and that who he recommends for the job must have some special qualities too. I think that's right.

Today is an enormous day in English domestic football history. Massive respect for Ferguson in what he has done, for the club in how they have handled it, for Everton in how they have dealt with a sore loss and to Moyes in impressing SAF enough that he has seemingly stood aside to make sure his man's gets the job.

I can't dent I've enjoyed these past couple of days. I guess I am a football romantic.

Like everything - it's all about timing !

very true about the timing, - but DM is no hurry to leave Everton and Man Utd are in no hurry to sign anybody, - but I really think that DM is the right personality for the job, whereas Jose is almost certain not, and he still has Chelsea links and probably will for some time. I think JM will go back to Chelsea, - his ego means that he has to be loved! City.... maybe, but I think Mancini has learned as the season has gone on, - they would be mad to let that experience go to waste, but we have seen it before with rich owners!

not smug at all that I got this one right wink - As we said before it is all in the timing, and I think that Fergie has done an honourable thing for the good of the Club as  Moyes was available and they wanted him before anybody else picked him up. Big congratulations to David Moyes for getting the job although I think it was his for some years. Wonder if Rooney is practicing his apology or looking for another job?

So, farewell then, Taggart. You had a really good innings and deserve 'nuff respect.

I think Moyes is the right choice. Mourinho's fat ego would not have fitted with the club, imo.

Mike - re: Wolves, I had a long chat with Ian about them, he's absolutely livid about how the Wolves board mishandled everything. Sad to see a club with such history (like Forest too) go down.

And congrats to Ajax for the third consecutive title under Frank de Boer, who will be extending to stay at Ajax for years to come. Maybe he'll become our own 'Fergie'.

Re: The Football Topic

I'm thinking that cheese was stuck with your tongue firmly in cheek though Brack eh?

Surprising result really, but given Citeh's lack of application this season it shouldn't be. Mancini has already paid the price.

Pleased for Wigan and it shows that it is still possible in a one off game to triumph, but against Citeh they shouldn't have had a hope. I hope it is enough for them because staying up might be beyond them this time, but lets see. Miracles do happen.

Disappointed, but not surprised to see Mancini get the chop. The Arabs, like Abramovich, pay the bills, so they get to say what happens. But if they were to take a leaf out of their neighbours book they would see that chopping and changing isn't the way. United just about gave Ferguson 3 years in the beginning and they have reaped quite a payback on that trust.

Citeh have had success in a much shorter time and given their resources would have more. But the Citeh paymasters unlike the United board at the time have no real history in football and a s result, like most of the world today, must have instant results. Realistically, they failed in the Champions league this year for sure, and the overall consistency was lacking in their play. Too many players again getting paid too much for too little.

I think there is a desperate need, if not for a wage cap (which will never happen), then payment by results. No wins, no wages or at least severely reduced. If clubs started paying against performance we might see some slightly more motivated players out there. I don't see Mancini being at fault. His players made appalling mistakes over the season. He can't kick every ball for gods sake.

As for Citeh, I don't see there being an improvement. Buying success will only cause problems when the much vaunted finance fair play rules come in so that isn't the answer. So now the club becomes a candidate for another mercenary manager. Benitez is probably a favourite for the job I guess given his existing knowledge of the English game, plus he has doen a fair job at Chelsea despite the criticism.

When will they learn? Never of course, which is why they will always be the second club in Manchester. Sorry to say it. Eastlands is a house built on sand...........

Re: The Football Topic

At half time last night I nearly wrote on here that no way were Chelsea going to win and would likely be thrashed if Benfica would stop pratting about and just put the ball in the net!

And so it looked in the second half too. Then against the run of play Torres scores a fine individual goal and hey ho we suddenly have a match. Cue the drama. Benfica penalty and then a bridesmaid pops up and becomes the bride scoring the winner.

Just as with Bayern last year Chelsea ground this one out. I'm actually pleased for Benitez more than anything, and perhaps Lampard. Both work hard for their success so it is deserved. Petr Cech too, who has been an outsanding servant to Chelsea and a great keeper. Probably their best ever.

It didn't seem likely at the beginning of the season, and yet there they are again. Champions League next year, European trophy as well as two other semi finals, and all that with a mish mash side.

I uspect the old guard of Terry, lampard, Cech and Cole still have another season of success in them. Of course, I detest them as any self respecting fan would, but I have to respect their achievements.

Re: The Football Topic

Not the champions league result I wanted but a fair game I thought. Dortmund paid the price for missing a host of early chances although Munich had their moments too.
Strange, but after Dortmund equalised I thought they would go and we w,ould really have a game. But they folded and seemed to have nothing left to offer. Lots of mistakes started to creep in and it was no surprise Bayern stole it at the death.

I'm disappointed from the point of view that the rich get richer and so on. Compared to Bayerns wealth Dortmund play with a hand behind their back, but then again so do Munich against the likes of big spending British and Spanish clubs. All relative I suppose, although less than 50℅ of the Munich side were German. Sign 'o the times.

I enjoyed the match though and you can't often say that about the CL final.

Re: The Football Topic

Now that the year's reached it's various conclusions globally, I thought I'd provide a brief update on how things panned out down under. Perhaps uncool to quote one's self but as these posts were back on page 53, have included for context.

shadowblue wrote:

With 53 pages in 3 years, I guess there's a little interest here!
Since we've had a bit of attention on the forum while Joe's been down under, for anybody interested here's a bit about our status with the beautiful game. That question was asked about it in USA back on the first page.

Our national comp, now 8 years in it's current guise as the A-League, plays (at least) 3rd fiddle behind two hand-egg codes - Australian Rules Football and Rugby League, Rugby being also somewhere in there. However, last night in Sydney 35,000 people saw Sydney FC with Alessandro del Piero as their new marquee player go down 3-2 at home to the Newcastle Jets with Emile Heskey as theirs. Both ADP and Heskey got on the scoresheet. Last week in Melbourne the opening round derby between Melbourne Victory and Melbourne Heart drew 42,000. So watch out other codes!

My team, the Central Coast Mariners, with the smallest regional population base and certainly no money for marquees, has its first home game this afternoon vs Perth Glory (there's some serious travel in this league. Perth to Wellington, NZ being 8 hours flying). Sydney and Newcastle each an hour and a bit to the south and north of us respectively, are our mortal enemies! In keeping with the 'champion team' will beat a 'team of champions' we finished top of the league last year ("Premiers", for the second time in 8 years). But in keeping with Australia's other codes tradition there is a finals series - "post season cup" we refer to it as, as we haven't yet won it - and people only seem to remember the winner of the Grand Final of that ("Champions").

Thanks for reading football lovers, if you got this far...

So Sydney FC with ADP and Newcastle Jets with Heskey finished the league in 7th and 8th positions respectively, therefore both missing the finals series. Top of the league was new club Western Sydney Wanderers, whose manager Tony Popovic had left the assistant job at Palace to take this one and was rewarded with coach of the year as well as the Premiership. My beloved Central Coast Mariners were 3 points back in 2nd. The play-offs resulted in us meeting WSW in the Grand Final where, in front of 42,000 fans, we prevailed 2-0 to claim our maiden Championship!

Oh, we also reached the Round of 16 in the Asian Champions League before losing to Chinese powerhouse Guangzhou Evergrande, coached by Marcello Lippi and whose playing roster is worth about 20 times ours.

I would also imagine that players feigning injury in Oz would also get quite short shrift from fans. I certainly hope so. That won't win any fans from Aussie rules or rugger!

Definitely unpopular! I've even seen our fans boo our own players diving (but we really give it to an opponent).

There's definitely been a stream of past their prime big name players that have come here and not set the league alight - Robbie Fowler and Mario Jardel come to mind. I think ADP does look special though.
The Mariners really don't have the budget for big players. We've got good scouting for Australian kids and develop them with some good senior players around them. Then we lose them because being a salary-capped league (marquees excluded) we can't compete with the offers from China, Korea, Japan and some go to Europe. One has just gone to Dortmund Borussia (Mustafa Amini, age 19). Our keeper, Mat Ryan (just 20 - and this is his 3rd year in the team) will surely go to Europe soon. He was awarded man of the match in the Grand Final 2 years ago - which we lost!
Tommy Rogic (age 19 - attacking midfielder) I suspect might end up over your way before too long.

Can I add from yesterday: CCM 1-0 Perth! Next week away to the Jets / Heskey.

We lost Tommy Rogic to Celtic in the January transfer window. Mat Ryan's just agreed to terms with Club Brugge.
One or two going might be going to Asia. Another youngster, defender Trent Sainsbury, will surely appear over your way before too long.

Another former CCM player from only 4 years ago (of whom I'm immensely proud) has just captained his side to promotion to the EPL next season! Come on, humour me - please name the club and player...

Mile Jedinak - Crystal Palace.

He'all have a tough job keeping them there though. They should all just enjoy it and try to get better jobs with other clubs.

Holloway as manager is a character and they may start well, depending on fixtures, but they have to be the hottest favourites for instant relegation. Of the new clubs I fancy Hull to hang on, but you never know.

I'all keep an eye out for A mini. He couldn't have gone to a better club than Dortmund. Klopp will give him him a chance if he can play. Germany is the place to be just now. 44000 average gates, great coverage TV wise. I'm considering buying a season ticket somesomewhere for next year. Niedersachsen has quite a few Bundelsiga options just now. Hamburg, Bremen, Wolfsburg, Hanover, and now Braunschweig.
