Re: The Football Topic

Well 67 minutes played so far and to be honest at the moment Dortmund are completely outplaying Citeh. Joy to see. Both side have had excellent chances to score before Reus put Dortmund in front but the amount of chances Dortmund have had now is incredible. Only Joe Hart is playing at the moment.

This performance totally sums up Citeh's shortcomings. They might have fantastic individuals but they cannot build up play adequately through the middle of the park. The ball gets knocked around by the back 4 and then hoofed upfield because they simply have no outlet. The midfield just doesn't work hard enough.

By contrast Dortmunds 5 man midfield has 2 strikers in there in Götze and Reus and their much better passing game is paying dividends.

City can save it but they need Tevez on now I would say.

At 75 minutes I would say at the moment Mancini doesn't have a clue. Lets see if his wonder individuals can still turn it round.

And they got Penalty....very harsh on Dortmund...

Re: The Football Topic

Wow, get out of jail or what? Dortmund dominate the half, have about 11 good chances and Citeh get a hooky penalty. Hit the guys arm and was a goal bound strike but he couldn't do anything about it. We've seen them given and not.

Before that Citeh had a header saved which was their ONLY effort in the second half. Joe Hart saved his team tonight and Dortmund must now rue the host of chances not taken.

Difficult to believe how poor Citeh are. Passing and movement is shocking. Apart from flashes of individual skill they have have no gameplan at all. Dortmund were able to press Citeh deep into their own half and they had no answer.

Can't see them having a CL future with such a poor home performance. They lucked into a point tonight.

Re: The Football Topic

can't see City getting out of their group... Only positive thing to say that it is great to see Joe Hart packing such a great game, - for too many years great keepers have had extremely quiet games. Love to see a keeper doing his stuff, memories of Pat Jennings and Gordon Banks tonight!

Re: The Football Topic

It was actually Joe Hart vs Dortmund, without him they would be down more than 3 goals.
Future is bright for England.....(as for Goalkeeper)

Re: The Football Topic

Unrelated to football game on the pitch but this is just hilarious...

Newcastle United have today unveiled Whey Aye Man, a black and white caped crusader with the speed of Hatem Ben Arfa , the strength of Shola Ameobi and the reflexes of Tim Krul .

The costume is now available to buy in Club stores and Shearer's Bar, priced at £49.99.

Ideal for nights out and stag dos, it will also make an eye-catching outfit for home and away games.

Newcastle Superhero Costume.....blimey!

Re: The Football Topic

It was indeed shocking how Citeh did not get thrashed, and that was a disgraceful penalty to give. Still, they'll get the six points off Ajax. sad

The enormous gulf between the top teams and the also-rans was never more evident than in Amsterdam last night. Ajax will finish with no points.

Puyol's horrific fall on Tuesday night resulted in a dislocated elbow, which will keep him out for at least two months. This means that the heart of Barca's defence during the first Classico this weekend will be Mascherano with either Song or Busquets, since Pique is also injured. Nevertheless, I still expect a Barca win! cool

RIP Iron Man

Rock On and keep the Faith

Re: The Football Topic

Watched the other Borussia tonight, against Fenebahrce. Unfortunately, Moenchegladbach played like Citeh from yesterday and got thrashed 2-4. No outlet through the midfield, constantly passing across the back four but with no midfield to take the ball from them.

The Turks secret? Workrate. 90 minutes total workrate. Pressing the Germans high up the park. One of the stars for the Turks was Dirk Kuyt who had a great game and crowned it with a great goal. Fellow midfielders Christian and Caner were also tremendous.

It was men against boys. If they play like that they'll be quite a match in Istanbul for sure. Enjoyable game. Borussia are in for a tough season. 9 goals against in 2 games. I can see why now............

I have to say, I enjoy this Europa Cup football. Teams you don't always see, often quite open matches. I guess not quite so much for these teams to lose so the football tends to be quite open. Good stuff.

also quite good at handball on the line..... World Cup behaviour a few years ago was disgraceful. Also think that Kenny's blind backing of this idiot helped contribute to his demise at L'pool...

I am bored without football. What do you guys do on weekend? (Apart from music)...

Re: The Football Topic

Well I suggest you tube trawling and watching Lionel Messi's performance for Argentina against Uruguay. He scored 2 and was the creator of the second goal in the 3-0. Plus there were a number of unbelievable moments.

His first goal is stunning. He makes a pass into the area and at that point he is no more in camera shot. the ball is played in...the keeper must make it...but no Messi comes from NOWHERE to score. When seen from a wider angle his pace off the mark is staggering, in line with his speed of thought.

His second goal is impudence itself. Knowing from a free kick the wall will jump he takes a chance and drills the ball on the floor. His chance pays off and the keeper has no chance.

When this Argentina plays like this, they must be a banker for the WC.

Tonight I should be at a triple birthday band party, but I think my return flight from London with Rottenair has left me well and truly infected with 'manflu'. No way, could I do an all-niter tonight!

So I'm medicated up to the eyeballs and watching Billy Joel 'Live at Shea Stadium' which the ZDF channel is showing here. So many great songs. (Jesus, I could nearly remember all the words to 'We didn't start the fire'....thats very nerdy........)

Still, it means I can finish off the guys birthday band room present. I've been collecting 'Classic Rock' magazine since it started and there are really just too many to store any more so I started making photo collages from the magazines. I know some would find it heresy, but there are so many great photos; B/W and colour, and they make the most amazing framed wallhangings.

Problem is, when I'm doing them I find myself reading the damn articles over again so one A1 sized picture takes about a week or more to do!

Boring weekend...............or what?!

the real joy of football can be found outside of the Premiership, - and other so called top leagues, - the money has poisoned the real game. - Combine that amount of money with people who are unintelligent, arrogant, conceited, poor communicators etc and you have a game so far removed from what it should be. Sure they are brilliant players, but they could bring so much more....

The real game is lower down the scale....My kids team ( I coach under 14's) lost today 5-nil in a cup game, - but the game was and is about more than just the final score. - For the first time this season we switched to playing wing backs with only 1 up front crowding the midfield as we knew that the opposition were much better than us, - and our focus this year is on league before cup. 10 minutes in and we lost our powerhouse central midfielder to a (accidental) poor tackle and twisted ankle but the other boys stepped up and tried their best. We held it for large parts of the game only losing goals to silly mistakes but our victory was the way the boys adapted really well to a changed strategy. 10 minutes into the second half we switched back to 4-4-2 which the boys did brilliantly, - it is great to see boys develop their game and themselves as people. We have boys from 4 different schools, - 1 extreme is a private  expensive school, - and then the other side of the scale is 3 boys originally from Mauritius whose backgrounds is very different, - parents without cars so I go pick them up for every game, - seeing all of these boys together mucking about is what football is about, - it should ALWAYS bring people together and forget the pathetic tribalism that it all too often prevalent.

Sermon over smile

My advice go find a lower league team to watch if you can, or even a Sunday/amateur league math perhaps?

Re: The Football Topic

Thanks Ian196, hasamike and Brack..
I follow Southend United too but I can't find any link to watch here and I also support my local team but problem is I now live around 400 miles away from my locals.
I had a nightout with friends on Friday night..it was great being with friends but I feel bored of having party..Maybe I'm getting old? Playing guitars for hours til my fingers hurt then randomly reading news and read Daily Mail comments (for fun)...it's 5 am in Thailand now and I am still widely awake. As I am writing this comment with my left hand, my right hand is typing "Stand Up comedy on YouTube and I will see if I like it and I will watch Messi skill on YouTube too lol.
I shall do as Ian suggested, gonna find some football club that isn't far from my end..
Thanks again smile.

Re: The Football Topic

With 53 pages in 3 years, I guess there's a little interest here!
Since we've had a bit of attention on the forum while Joe's been down under, for anybody interested here's a bit about our status with the beautiful game. That question was asked about it in USA back on the first page.

Our national comp, now 8 years in it's current guise as the A-League, plays (at least) 3rd fiddle behind two hand-egg codes - Australian Rules Football and Rugby League, Rugby being also somewhere in there. However, last night in Sydney 35,000 people saw Sydney FC with Alessandro del Piero as their new marquee player go down 3-2 at home to the Newcastle Jets with Emile Heskey as theirs. Both ADP and Heskey got on the scoresheet. Last week in Melbourne the opening round derby between Melbourne Victory and Melbourne Heart drew 42,000. So watch out other codes!

My team, the Central Coast Mariners, with the smallest regional population base and certainly no money for marquees, has its first home game this afternoon vs Perth Glory (there's some serious travel in this league. Perth to Wellington, NZ being 8 hours flying). Sydney and Newcastle each an hour and a bit to the south and north of us respectively, are our mortal enemies! In keeping with the 'champion team' will beat a 'team of champions' we finished top of the league last year ("Premiers", for the second time in 8 years). But in keeping with Australia's other codes tradition there is a finals series - "post season cup" we refer to it as, as we haven't yet won it [/wink] - and people only seem to remember the winner of the Grand Final of that ("Champions").

Thanks for reading football lovers, if you got this far...

Re: The Football Topic

Saw the goals Shadowblue of ADP and Heskey. Amazing that Heskey was able to have so many top clubs and is still able find a place to play.

He held down an international place for YEARS just on the basis he was able to hold the ball up! Sorry, but I always thought he was a donkey. A player that actually had the 'it' but never really knew what do with 'it'. I guess he'll get a year or so out of it before they finally realise they need someone who can do more than just hold the ball up. Pleased to see though that soccer is making some inroads down there. With the travel it must make the costs fairly high to keep it going. Important therefore that they don't lavish all the money on 'has beens' or never quite were has beens!

I would also imagine that players feigning injury in Oz would also get quite short shrift from fans. I certainly hope so. That won't win any fans from Aussie rules or rugger!

Definitely unpopular! I've even seen our fans boo our own players diving (but we really give it to an opponent).

There's definitely been a stream of past their prime big name players that have come here and not set the league alight - Robbie Fowler and Mario Jardel come to mind. I think ADP does look special though.
The Mariners really don't have the budget for big players. We've got good scouting for Australian kids and develop them with some good senior players around them. Then we lose them because being a salary-capped league (marquees excluded) we can't compete with the offers from China, Korea, Japan and some go to Europe. One has just gone to Dortmund Borussia (Mustafa Amini, age 19). Our keeper, Mat Ryan (just 20 - and this is his 3rd year in the team) will surely go to Europe soon. He was awarded man of the match in the Grand Final 2 years ago - which we lost!
Tommy Rogic (age 19 - attacking midfielder) I suspect might end up over your way before too long.

Can I add from yesterday: CCM 1-0 Perth! Next week away to the Jets / Heskey.
