Re: The Football Topic

United have the experience to go ahead and win it again now. Bitter pill for Mancini and City's backers - but no sympathy for them.

The battle at the top doesn't really interest me too much. It's actually for the Premiership title of financial debt. Neither club could win the title without having their enormous levels of debt.

I pray for a revolution in the game. It would mean my own club going to the wall I guess, but I would accept that if it meant football and footballers got 'real' again. Think of it, a premiership game with 22 players from the British Isles on the field.............and jumpers for goal posts...........

Fixed that for you, Mike. wink

Agree with the rest, and congrats to Brack's team on taking the title (can't see them blowing this five point lead). btw Mike, we're live on the Beeb Friday 6 pm CET.

Barca-AC return tonight with all to play for, should be a cracker!

Re: The Football Topic

have to say if United do win it this year they deserve a lot of respect; Fergies man management skills are superb, - to have brought back Scholes and kept Giggs going, - and the fact that these 2 have played a major part in the season is truly amazing and praise worthy.

The title was there for City to loose, and it will be interesting to look back at the end and see what part Tevez had in the dropping of points, - 1 looney striker is enough for any team but 2 in the same team is a recipe for disaster!

What else....? Spurs V Arsenal in the run-in, - I take my hat off to Wenger for picking things up with a squad with some serious gaps in it. - Spurs still fragile at the back? Sorry to say that you cant have a part time centre back and another out injured for most of the season (Dawson) and have a smooth ride to finish in the top 4.

West Ham....dip in form at the wrong time? As Reading (I was in the Madjeski stadium last week) are on the rise....more squeaky bum time?

Crawley....oh dear, how typical of my home town, - most memorable part of the season could be a punch up on the pitch... :-(

Re: The Football Topic

Gotta agree with you Ian.

On the Hammers theme I can't say I am surprised. 6 or 7 weeks ago they headed the table by 4 points or something. Fact is though the forwards strike rate is pathetically poor this season. The quality isn't there.

Sam is getting grief for the style of play but what I have seen they pass the ball a fair bit. He's made a side that is difficult to beat but profilgate with the chance taking. Too many draws now. The old habit is still sadly lacking. NO KILLER INSTINCT.

Well done to Reading. There could be twists and turns but I see the top 2 getting the automatic spots. West Ham will just have to EARN it through the play offs and maybe that is no bad thing.

As for the Spurs, the whole Ledley King thing is a metiphor for their dilemma. Reliance on an injured centre half who can only play half the games is not a solution.

Arsenal attempted to plunder Dortmund of their players. If Spurs want a great Centre back in the making then Dortmund's Hummel is the man. Spend the cash. He reminds me of Blanc/Stam/Adams all rolled into one. A class act.

Fitting that North London's finest have to go at for the spot. I still fancy Spurs for it.

United all the way now for the title. This isn't one of their best sides. How could it be with Scoles returning from retirement and as you say he and Giggs still having a major role. Even so, they've got it about them to see off the Johnny come lately's.

You can build a team with lots of money but you can't buy character. It has to be there in the first place. Ferguson's triumph over the years is that he seeks players that have it / must have it and then he calls on it, time after time. Munich seem to have that about them this year. I'd quite like to see them give Barcelona a game in the final.

To be honest I quite like to see ANYONE give Barcelona a game!

very interesting Jeff, - sorry missed your reply previously. Same problems I guess wherever you go in the world.

Well done Man Utd this weekend, - and even though i hate to say this, - well done Arsenal. - Harry you need to get things together now, - 1 point games will not do the job I fear.

Re: The Football Topic

Last night I watched possibly the most entertaining 0-0 of all time between Real Mad and Valencia. Real had 33 !! attempts on goal, Valencia 17! You can sometimes go a whole month  without seeing 50 attempts on goal. big_smile

Or in the case of Aberdeen, about a season!

Hotting up nicely over in Spain!  El Clasico later this month could be very interesting with only 4points in it now...Barca all the way for me.

it does cause some amusement at work though seeing fergies boys laughing at the latest balotelli-antics in the blues camp. The wheels really seem to have fallen off the city bus

hello and welcome, - it is good to have  a new voice in this debate....and after what Norwich did to Spurs I share your dislike!! - Although in truth Spurs are and may continue to do themselves harm, - if Sir Alan Sugar has said it is time for Ledley to move over.

edited for spelling mistake!

I always thought wigan was going to be a tough game for Man U. Hats off too wigan for beating them for the first time. The end of the season is going to be entertaining if it stays this close

@Ian916 Believe me, I was cheering on Spurs against norwich.  When gareth bale hit the crossbar i thought it was going to be a done deal. It was really a shame you didnt win.

Re: The Football Topic

What a weekend!
A goal bonanza for some,  a date at Wembley for others. And then - the goal that wasn't.......

At the risk of sounding naive - what is stopping the progress to getting these crucial, match changing decisions right? When everyone at home can see the ball didn't cross the line, but the ref on the pitch can't - something is seriously wrong!!

In rugby, video footage is used to aid the ref when he is unsighted. Even Wimbledon has 'Hawkeye', for key points.
Big bucks rest on the outcome of these games, not to mention the pressure on players and managers. Anyone know when this problem will be fixed?

Not in Sepp Blatter's lifetime. sad

This is something all fans everywhere agree on. Many progressive players, managers and refs also want it. It's so simple and obvious to all, except to those who could do something to fix these anomalies - FIFA. The sooner FIFA gives the go-ahead for electronic aids to be used, the better, but don't hold your breath.

On a much happier note, Fabrice Muamba has been disharged from hospital!! big_smile

Re: The Football Topic

- I think that the goal that was not yesterday will be the spark that sets the use of goal line technology going, - yesterdays mistake was so obvious and possibly ruined a massively important game. I have a lot of respect for referees and yesterday it proved how impossible a job it is, - Atkinson was previously slated for not giving a QPR (I think) goal because he could not be certain that it was a goal so his decision yesterday may have been as a result of that press and media coverage and associated pressure.... interesting spin on this is that I heard that he was today appointed as a goal line official for champions league.....how does that work then? - Although to add Atkinson should be praised for his decision on allowing Spurs goal to stand and not sending Petr Cech off.

The resistance is all guff with this talk about the game being exactly the same from grass roots to World Cup, - there has to be acceptance that premiership football and the like is different to a kids game on the park, - which is all about education really, - something that the FA's around the world are extremely poor at.

Re: The Football Topic

Good night for football yesterday if not for my own club. Munich deserved their win but Madrid will be a different affair I fancy.

Congrats to Reading. 15 wins out of 17 is a massive run and they were 16th(!) when they started it. West Hams general complacency and lack of quality in finishing has all but cost them automatic promotion. It is a failure big time, but I don't blame Big Sam. The players have had all the chances and dominated games and just haven't made it count. They'll have to earn promotion the hard way now and that means dominating the play-offs. If WH are, or believe they are a Prem club, then in the next few weeks they'll have to prove it.

Soton are determined to win the league and it will be interesting to see if they can topple Reading. I suspect they can.

In this moment I spare a thought for Coventry. A club I always had a fondness for in the Willie Carr and Ernie Hunt days. I think it was the green and black striped away kit. I seem to recall even buying that strip for myself and in Subbuteo form!

Looks like they'll drop into League 1 now and further obscurity. Still I hope they can take heart from Southamptons resurgence. It doesn't have to be over. As Coventry fans look at the other Sky Blues with their wadloads of cash challenging for the Prem title and Europeans honours next year maybe they'll recall Citeh's dramatic fall and how they have made it back tio the top flight as well.

I still remember Coventry provided one of the best Cup Final wins ever in true fairytale fashion.

Here's wishing them a successful 2012/13 campaign, wherever they are.

Re: The Football Topic

Drogba was an absolute, cheating, diving disgrace, just like he shrieked into the camera back in 09. I hope they get dumped on in big way next week. A team that cost hundreds of millions winds up playing like that - shocking. Plus, they were incredibly lucky not to concede, can't see that happening two games running.

Re: The Football Topic

agree with you verdict on Drogba, - one of the greatest footballers behaving in such an appalling way, - I guess Chelsea are not going for the fair play award then... Baraca did not look they settled last night but cannot see that being the same at home.

Barca v Bayern is my hope, Riberry, Robben, Iniesta and Messi on the same pitch...talent at the top of their game aplenty!

Re: The Football Topic

Damn Sheffield United, all my life they have brought me to apoplexy. So near and yet arghhh.... 2 left, Stevenage at home, Exeter away. Can't let the other half be automatically promoted at our expense. Can the nerve cope, Come on you Blades. Even without Evans.

Come on the Blades (sorry Idolbone just had to borrow your line)
