Topic: Ana Popovic & Jason Ricci

Last night Ana Popovic (along with guest Jason Ricci on harp) played to a packed house at Moondog's in Pittsburgh Pa. Over 2 hours of bone chilling blues rock...she gets better every time I see her. Let me tell you if you have never seen Ana play/sing then you are really missing something(visually and sonically)
.
Hopefully she's coming to a town near you on this 2009 American tour.....:)

And so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually.........

Sounds like a great combination! smile

Re: Ana Popovic & Jason Ricci

I have Jason coming in with his own band here next weekend and Ana in June. Really looking forward to Ana. An old Bonamassa buddy Tony Basile is out with Ana now.

It will be the first time in to the OKC area for Jason and Ana. Hope people will come out for them both.

Re: Ana Popovic & Jason Ricci

I'm hoping that Ana will come to Wisconsion soon. She's one of the people on my short list to see. smile

Hope you get a good turnout, Jim.  Tell Jason the UK is waiting (he's not been here yet!) smile

Re: Ana Popovic & Jason Ricci

Listening to our local blues show tonight. On comes this live smokin boogie tune. Gravely voice bad **** harp player with a darn good guitar player. I was wonder who the heck it was. That's right you guessed it Jason Ricci. Got a mention from the DJ for the upcoming show. I think I'm going to like it.

I would seriously consider that Nic, but trying to get a day off during the summer weeks here would take an act from The Almighty! I guess I'll just have to hang around town until Ana comes here.

Hey, a show for you; Davy and BDS open for Buddy Guy June 30th at Summerfest on the Harley-Davidson Roadhouse stage. BDS 7:30 PM and Buddy Guy 9:30 PM. Cost=your Summerfest admission ticket. And this from the site:

"Tuesday, June 30 - Noon - 8:00 - Kapco's 2 Buck Tuesday at Summerfest. All patrons attending Summerfest on Tuesday, June 30 between Noon and 8:00 pm can purchase an admission ticket for only $2 compliments of Kapco! Purchase tickets now on Summerfest Instant Tickets."

Can't beat that with a wet stick! smile

I LOVE Summerfest, but unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to make it at all this year... I've seen Buddy Guy twice at summerfest. "Make it so funky they can smell it!"

Food is almost better than the music at Summerfest: Gator on a stick (like a brat on a stick covered in BBQ), Crawdaddy's crayfish baskets,  Greek, Chinese, Roasted almonds and sugar coated nuts.. funnel cakes... MM MMM MMM!

Re: Ana Popovic & Jason Ricci

Back on topic. Jason appeared for the first time in Oklahoma City. Two 90 minute sets. The band was very good. I liked the guitar player. He needs some tone lessons from Joe. He played through some combo amp which sounded a lot like a 4 10 Fender set a bit shrill. Only bothered me during his solo's. Drummer played all styles Jazz, Funk, Blues really well. The bass player had his own style very solid pocket player then went out there on his solo's.

Jason I would have to say is the best harp player I have ever seen. I haven't seen Popper or really anybody else of note. Very impressive player. Didn't think I would dig three hours of harp but it worked. His vocals are not his strong suit. They worked at times but other times he was so out of breath after ripping on the harp for ten minutes I felt sorry for him having to sing.

Worth checking him out. It was a ten dollar ticket and I would have to say the people got their money's worth.

Re: Ana Popovic & Jason Ricci

Very nice write up and interview with Jason Ricci in Blues Wax Ezine today!

Just a little snip of it:

"BluesWax Sittin' In With Jason Ricci

Blues Ambassador to The Next Generation

By Stacy A. Jeffress

Editor's Note: As president of the Northeast Blues Society, I would always tell the artists we sent to The Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge that being in the contest is almost as important as winning. I feel the same about the Blues Music Awards. This year Billy Gibson won Blues Harmonica Player of the Year, and he deserves it if for no other reason than his enthusiasm and his absolute joy of performing. That said, Jason Ricci, who was nominated in the same category, is changing the definition of Blues harmonica in a way arguably as profound as Jimi Hendrix's voice on guitar did 42 years ago. In doing so, Ricci is enlisting new, often younger, fans to the base audience, and he's doing that from a position that throws out all the rules of stereotypes. Stacy Jeffress' interview with Ricci offers amazing insight, and Ricci's bald honesty in his answers is what I would expect from him because it mirrors his art. The conversation between Jeffress and Ricci makes for exciting and important reading."
