Re: Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, and Hubert Sumlin "Smokestack Lightning"

Eric,

Thank you so much for finding and posting this gem.

I had the pleasure and HONOR of standing directly in front of Hubert last year as he performed at the Doheny Blues Festival.  I was lucky enough to meet him afterwards, and found him to be sweet and lighthearted.  He actually kissed my right hand as we parted.  I remember THAT because Willie "Big Eyes" Smith kissed my LEFT!!!  wink

Coincidentally, I'm due to see the Allman Brothers Band next weekend, right around the corner.  I'm looking VERY forward to that.

You've inspired me to look back thru my Doheny archives and see if I have any footage of Hubert, although..... I'm afraid I was shooting with the "better" camera during the entire festival, and didn't realize until I got home that both the video and audio quality is far inferior to that of my little workhorse.

I thought you'd find this quote from a biography that Bob Margolin wrote about Hubert to be inspiring.......

"Still gigging often while most legends of his age are gone or retired, Hubert has faced and met the biggest challenge of his life. In the Fall of ’02, he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He had one lung removed, and has been tested to be cancer-free. He not only has already recovered his youthful strength, but has quit smoking and drinking. Given the chance to continue to make his music, and thrilled to survive, Hubert is living and performing with fresh fire. “I ain’t through yet!” he assures us, and proves it with every twisted Blue note he burns on his guitar.
Does Hubert Sumlin have a secret? What makes him one of the all-time great Blues guitar players as well as such a good guy? I don’t know, but I think they’re somehow related. I do know, however, that I’m blessed to enjoy his music and his friendship. "

You know Eric, we all get very excited when the young ones, here on the Forum, and out at the shows are absorbed by the blues.  Keep sharing your enthusiasm.  It is contagious.  Keep lovin' the blues.

Best,

Libby  smile

I know that Joe could play one of those kid's guitars with the plastic strings and make it sound good-
