Topic: Davy Knowles/Jeff Beck, Turner Hall-Milwaukee, 4/18/09

All I can say is, if you can get tickets to one of these shows, do it!

After arriving at Milwaukee’s airport from a family vacation, I had Dawn drop me off directly at Turner Hall. My sister Lynn then drove down and met me there and we had dinner before the show. You might remember that our very own Joe Bonamassa performed at this same venue on March 8th.

I was able to get word to Davy via his very, very good friend ( wink ) Amber who was at the merchandise table. She texted him and about 5 minutes later as I sat at my balcony table, I heard someone shouting my name and there stood Davy. I must say, he looked terrific and excited to perform this night. We chatted for about 30 minutes to within 10 minutes of him going on stage which really surprised me and made me a little nervous for him.

Davy played for about 30 minutes as the opening act for Jeff Beck. He covered some new material along with at least one song from “Roll Away”. He also did an absolutely terrific version of “As The Crow Flies” playing slide guitar on his Dobro. The crowd really got into that song! I must say again, this young man is something very special and I guarantee we will continue to hear more great things from him in the future.

Next up was Jeff Beck and his band and I’m still shaking my head trying to fathom exactly what I heard last night. There is not another human being on this planet that can make a guitar sound like Jeff Beck did. If you think Jeff’s playing is great off his recordings, then you must see him perform live. Even my sister Lynn who had never even heard of Jeff Beck before last night, marveled at his genius. Appearing in a all white sleeveless suit with white boots, Mr. Beck patrolled the stage and owned every second of the show. His terrific band comprised of bass, drums and keyboard musicians, matched Jeff’s playing to perfection. Total time played including encores was about 2 hours. Needless to say, this is a must see show!

Here are some pictures from last night and my apologies as I was shooting them from a fair distance from the balcony:

I was there and it was fantastic. Jeff Beck is a true Guitar god. Also needing mention is Beck's female bassist - 22 yr old Australian Tal Wilkenfeld. She was one of the highlights of the night a true talent that stood strong with the talented men on stage. Keep an eye out for that one.

When I was a child I spoke as a child, But all I heard was how I should get ahead,
Now growing up it ain't anything but all This indecision with these debts and doubts
And worries hanging over my head. When I was a child I spoke as a child,
I wish I could remember what I said.

I'm in total agreement with you there Rev. Paul, Tal was unbelievable. And to think she's only 22 years old and can play bass like that; truly marvelous!! smile

I ove this forum, I had not noticed until I read is that Uk dates were open. Just got some great seats for Birmingham. I must say this year is a blinder for us and concerts, I think the only thing that could improve it is if Joe announced a gig in my livin room cool

Nicely done Martin!! See you there, althought it might be a bit harder to spot you than in the Robin! Couldn't agree with you more on the good year for concerts, I don't think I've ever gigged this much in my life. Good times!!

Totally agreed. big_smile

Roy, did Jeff and Davy also play together for a song like during the Mule Tour? And was Davy´s show acoustic only?

Re: Davy Knowles/Jeff Beck, Turner Hall-Milwaukee, 4/18/09

So funny what Davy said on facebook:

Davy Knowles cannot stop listening to Gov't Mule. When I grow up I want to be Warren Haynes

I think I've already got more concerts lined up already this year than any year in memory.  Kind of nice liking artists that don't cost megabucks to go and see.

Davey is all acoustic, he does not get to play with Mr.Beck.

Eva,

I agree with what Rev. Paul said about acoustic although, Davy does "plug in" his acoutic guitar as well as his Dobro. As Paul said, Jeff and Davy did not share the stage.

I asked Davy how in the world he got the gig of opening for Mr. Beck. He said that apparently Jeff heard a song that Davy did and liked it enough that he told his management to contact Davy's management and so, it was set up.

Some may also have noticed that on Davy's Facebook, he had mentioned a "tearful goodbye" in Milwaukee. I'm sure that had a lot to do with his close friend Amber. wink ......................Hey wait, you don't think he meant me, do you? yikes lol lol lol lol

Has anyone asked Davy what he thinks of Jeff Becks playing??  wink
