Hi Jessica,
The OGWT was, by far, the best music programme ever. You put some great clips in there, I especially like the ones by Bob Marley, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Thin Lizzy and Johnny Winter.
If I had to add one more the first one that comes to mind is May You Never by John Martyn. One of the most beautiful songs ever written.

Great topic Jessica, though I see you've gone for overkill in the first post. big_smile Have to find the time to check all these out, but without looking here's one of my all-time favorites -

Spot on, Tripsy - the BEST music program on tv EVER!! cool

RIP Iron Man

Re: THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST. Gone but not forgotten

Some great stuff there Jessica.

I am too young to remember the programme, but I recall clearly in the early 1990s seeing a selection of artists on it broadcast on the tv and that's how me and some friends first heard of Rory Gallagher. In fact my (more musically talented) friends learned the song and added it to their own band's set list! smile

I could not find the song on their, but this is cool and was from the same performance:

One of the videos Jessica put was an interesting interview with Muddy Waters and they were discussing if blues had a future - I think we know the answer now! smile

Re: THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST. Gone but not forgotten

Yeah - lets get it back - BBC3 will do (don't think theres any chance on BBC2 anymore)

Some great clips there Jessica - esp. Sweet Home Alabama, and how cool are Billy & Dusty??

Here's one I found a few weeks ago after hearing it on Planet Rock - I hadn't heard it for years - great guitar!

Vh1 Classic occasionally shows some OGWT shows in its Classic Concert series, I've seen Skynyrd, Petty, AC/DC and a few others there. . . all good stuff. Would be great to see more.

Re: THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST. Gone but not forgotten

Phew my back is F*****G killing me...Been out in the garden all day.  Hey Hammer 'OVERKILL's my middle name wink You'll get used to it!

Really enjoyed watching all the vids, thanks everyone.
I need to give some thought as to how we're going to achieve the return of OGWT. Any ideas?  I will go for it if we can work out a strategy.

Gonna watch Rory again later as I'm cooking now and dont have time to really listen.  Is there a Rory topic on here?  I have a very sad tale about a Rory gig in 1992...at the Mowlem theatre in Swanage Dorset, where I used to live.  Bought tickets, then my husband (now ex!) threw a tantrum and said he didnt want to go -so I didn't go either sad  HOW stupid was that?  I should have divorced him on the spot!  Rory was one of the few people I didn't get to see live in the 70s.

Remember Be Bop Deluxe well, they were also regulars on the London pub circuit in the 70s.

To Diversify a little ...Another important landmark of great music in 70s UK HAS been restored and that's the Roundhouse @ Chalk Farm.  We used to get in there for 50p on a Sunday afternoon to something they called 'Implosion'.  It was from about 2.30 - 10.30pm and I saw some amazing bands there (including some of the aforementioned).

Here's a clip of the Pink Faries
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uI976o34A9k
There's a worse quality one, but it does show an old 'Routemaster' bus, some of the local scenery and the psychedelic mayhem which was the Roundhouse in those days!

And his Garyness (after restoration) at the Jim Capaldi Tribute gig OMG it's the Whispering One too! yikes

... *edit* LISTENED TO THAT ONE NOW

PHEW that was HOT! Thanks Greenose
How many guitarists can play blues harp like that!?

Re: THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST. Gone but not forgotten

If the show was brought back I very much doubt that we would feel the same way about it. Unless it were to feature artists from the rock, blues and prog world. I would love to see a programme that features the kind of current artists we all love on this forum whilst maybe adding an archive piece of footage for old time's sake each week.
I think Planet Rock should diversify into the tv world, I'm sure they could produce a brilliant show that could compare to the OGWT.

You could be on to something there Tripsy - they would have no shortage of well known guest presenters.

Ya is that the 1974 Double album?  I've got a copy going mouldy in my garage coz I dont have a record player any more sad  Bought it way back when I was into all things Irish (due to the influence of Philo and the boys)
Got the CD of digitally remastered Tatoo a few years ago.

I know what you mean, it was all so fresh and exciting then (or was it just that we were fresh and exciting!)  However, as you say there is definitely an audience for this kind of music, so we should be catered for on TV as well as radio.  We can't just spend the rest of our lives trawling U-tube for an evening's entertainment!

Re: THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST. Gone but not forgotten

Theres never been a show to better OGWT. Some of the artists I remember are Skynrd, Little Feat,
Tim Buckley, Alex Harvey. The list goes on.

Sky Arts, channel 256, is pretty good for music. They have shown some good Blues shows recently.

Hi Tripsy

Agreed...and a great clip.

I've just finished reading the John Martyn biog.
Will bring it with me to Gateshead.
It's yours.

He seemed a wild card did John.
Crazy.

Re: THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST. Gone but not forgotten

I knew John Martyn when he lived in Hastings UK back in the 70's and yes he was a very wild character. Back then it was too much charlie and too much alcohol, but oh boy could he play and sing.
