Re: The Football Topic

- sorry to correct you mate, - but Blatter has not resigned, but said that he will resign WHEN a new election takes place which could be next year or even longer, - he is still playing a game and still in charge.

- anybody else notice the hypocrisy in how the FIFA wrong doing has come to light? The FBI and IRS were investigating Chuck Blazer so they offered him a plea (real meaning, - a bribe) to wear a wire (recording device) and catch others making bribes.... Is that justice? And now anybody who had a dodgy conversation (like perhaps Jack Warner) with Chuck is covering their own backside offering to provide the evidence... Rats leaving a sinking ship perhaps?

.... still think Europe should withdraw and we should stop buying or using any sponsors products.

come on Barca!! wink

- the problem is that the media and therefore public are focusing the problems on Blatter, whilst he is massively at fault for allowing, and promoting what went on but he is just one in a large group of wrong doers, - he has spent years building a massive team round him who are equally as bad, - South America, Africa and Asia; football is split.

I would be surprised if the Russian finals get pulled but I would not want to be an investor in Qatar right now!

Russia WC is 2018, - Russia is a football nation with an infrastructure and the tournament can be played when all domestic leagues are finished, - and we are already within the qualifying stages. Qatar, however in 2022 is not a football nation, no infrastructure and the dates given (December) for the tournament clash with ALL of the major football leagues, - none of which have agreed to the required break in their season. - Even without this current FIFA uncertainty attendance at Qatar Wold Cup is not a given for many nations. - If FIFA does come down like a house of cards and then there is a move to re-bid then I suspect hosting a 2018 WC will be a bodge for any other nation due to the short lead-in, - but 2022 is long enough away for it to be re-bid and awarded. AND importantly this is the one that Europe does not want to play. - There were protests yesterday at the game in Scotland between them and Qatar.

Edit to add: A lot of opinion on Qatar being stripped of the WC: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world … 02979.html

Mr. Blazer was, IMO, caught up in the wiretapping of international comms by our Feds looking for terrorist links. One of those lookie here what we got deals.
He had been caught dead, probably on a wire fraud charge, since he agreed to carry a wire and assist in bringing down the operation in exchange for  lenient treatment. I'm sure he got some good stuff over the last year and a half.
Lots more will be forthcoming.

Re: The Football Topic

Platini fights on though....

what does it say about someone who asks for a million per year, but to avoid various financial potholes actually gets paid Euros 300k per year for 4 years. Then forgets he has been paid the 1.2million Euros after 4 years, 'mistakenly' believes the arrangement was for Euro500k per year, and sends an invoice to FIFA for 2m Euros, belatedly, which they pay!

I can accept that at a certain level of super rich and powerful deals are done on a handshake and a whim but when both men are the heads of international organisations some form of accountability, financially and morally are necessary.

Platini is an idiot if he thinks these kind of arrangements and management of his affairs are acceptable given his position. If he ISN'T corrupt, then it makes him look so and as a result his reputation if tarnished. The story with his son getting preferential jobs in the mid-East is further proof of his scant regard for how things look and what might be thought.

Blatter is a fool. Fighting on just isn't an option. IF he doesn't go soon I can see National bodies withdrawing from FIFA and forming their own governing body and arranging their own tournaments.

It is ironic that the situation is beginning to parallel F1 a few years ago and doubly ironic that F1's ringmaster Bernie Ecclestone actually came out this past week supporting Blatter and his presidency. Why? Because Bernie was in Russia giving Vladimir Putin a major a$$licking and supporting Blatter's cause which gave Russia the next World Cup and expousing what a good guy Blatter really is. What isn't ironic is how dictators, whether presidents of countries or sports organisations stick together. The mighty dollar, management of the media, suppression of the truth are all just tools of the trade to these guys.
Ecclestone has perfected the Teflon exterior that Blatter aspires to. Court cases, bribery and corruption and he is still there, wheeling and dealing.

F1 missed a trick years ago not breaking out and forming their own governing body. Mercedes Honda and Renault were funding a group to turn F1 into a motor racing equivalent of the NFL. But Bernie knew what buttons to push, persuading Ferrari that in the 'new world' they would be the same as the other competing teams, but with him, they get preferential payments, technical vetoes and so on. Ferrari sold their soul to Bernie and now we get Grand Prix in Russia, and next year, what is it...Azbekistan?...possibly at the expense of Monza. The French and German Grand Prix have already gone.

Football should take note. Clean FIFA out from the top to bottom or close it down and start again. Germany's DFB are probably the strongest voice at the moment, being current World Champions. If they, France, Spain, Brazil, Argentina and Chile say 'Non', we don't play in Russia in 2018 unless FIFA is immediately completely reformed. You need people of absolute integrity there now. Sadly there don't seem to be too many around any more. I'm racking my brains and I could only come up with HRH Princess Anne!

I admire your willingness to write so much on this subject Mike. - I think only FIFA can close FIFA down or change it and as they (allegedly) run it for self interest rather than the good of the game then they will sit there waiting for others to force them to do something.

I don't do it often Ian. I'm back into my football again at the moment I have to say. There is a window of opportunity here. I just hope the various associations that matter opt to try and force it. Unfortunately only this past week the DFB in Germany have become mired in a scandal concerning the awarding of their 2006 World Cup. Nothing, it seems, in football, is free of corruption of one sort or another.

Fifa: Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini get eight-year bans

Fifa president Sepp Blatter and Uefa boss Michel Platini have been suspended for eight years from all football-related activities following an ethics investigation.
They were found guilty of breaches surrounding a £1.3m ($2m) "disloyal payment" made to Platini in 2011.
The Fifa ethics committee found Blatter and Platini had demonstrated an "abusive execution" of their positions.
"I will fight for me and for Fifa," Blatter, 79, said at a news conference.
The bans come into force immediately.

Hey, it's a good day for Football !

They fight on though. Uefa evens supports Platini still. From what I've read (and given that Platini has found jobs for his son and other cohorts with the Quatari's and such like) Platini has been a little indiscreetin his dealings. Nevertheless, his 'deal' with FIFA is documented apart from the paymount amount which was verbally agreed.
I can see Platini being successful eventually but nevertheless 'tainted'. In his own mind he is completely innocent of course, his arrogance only outstripped by his ambition. I thought once he should head FIFA, but you know, he has had his snout in the FIFA trough as well.....and probably knew some of the goings on but said......or chose to say....nothing.

By denouncing the antics of FIFA he would have become the next President of the world game, but chose to keep quiet...why?

They refuse to go quietly so footballs governing body's name will continue to drag through the mud. FIFA needs a new untainted head now, from outside football if necessary. After all, it is a massive business and the guy in charge even as an interim head is as tainted as the rest of them.

Max Mosley (ex FIA Chief) is pretty old now but at least he could steady the ship for a couple of years. His only peccadillo was being caught with his trousers down..................lets be fair, most footballers have been caught like that too.............

Re: The Football Topic

I see football, or soccer, whatever you want to call it has fallen off the radar on here. So, I'll update it with a post.
Cataclysmic season end in the offing with just 9 games or so to go. I think every English soccer fan other than those of Tottenham or Manchester City this season are probably praying that Leicester City win the EPL this year. I know I certainly do.

I'm a West Ham fan and we are in 5th place but as football fan first I have to hope that Leicester can do it. If they do, it will provide an impetus to all those middle table clubs to dream a little bigger and that miracles can happen.

Right now with a 5 point gap over Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs themselves in the running for the title after almost 60 years) it is Leicester's title to lose and Tottenham's to win. Last week Spurs threw all their eggs in the EPL basket by fielding a weakened side against Dortmund in the Europa League. They were well beaten 3-0 in Dortmund but I think it was the right decision. They have waited so long for a title tilt and this chance may NEVER come again. Chelsea have flopped this year, Arsenal and Man City inconsistent and unconvincing, Manchester United out of sorts and Klopp is only just starting his revolution at Liverpool. The League was ready for an upset and now we have it........hopefully.

The FA cup has produced a similar upset. 3 of the so-called 'Top 4' clubs are out. EPL minors Watford and Crystal Palace will battle it out for a place in the final, as will Everton and the winners of the tie between West Ham and Manchester United. My beloved West Ham were held to a late draw by United in Manchester. Now they must replay in East London. Man U will not relish facing a rabid nightime sell out crowd at Upton Park. It will be the last cup tie ever to be played there before our move to the Olympic Stadium. So, they can make a little bit of history by seeing off United in grand style. The stage is set.

Could be a troubling 10 days for United. Perhaps they will cast out of Europe by Liverpool, lose in the Derby on Sunday to City and then out of the Cup at West Ham. If it happens, then expect manager Louis Van Gaal to be picking up his cards.

Strangely enough this unusual season has occurred before Sky's extra millions start rolling into the clubs. But hopefully it might be a sign that there could be a change in the pecking order on a regular basis. Most EPL sides can now afford 1, 2 or even 3 top quality players meaning that on any given day anyone can beat anyone.

With top teams needing to play about 70 games per season the richest clubs will need to have 2 teams available in order to maintain Champions League & Domestic League challenges. Arsenals Arsene Wenger predicted as much 5 years ago. Now it will come to pass. Trouble is, when you are a young player earning 3 million or more per year you just want to play and not sit on the bench waiting to be rotated through the team to play. Hence smaller clubs, like Leicester will start looking attractive. They will have the money and the performance opportunities to be able to compete with the biggest clubs.

I certainly hope so. There is no question that the excessive money has ruined the game but as it slowly moves towards an American style league concept maybe there is some hope for the game. Lets see and just enjoy the moment. C'mon Leicester!

I get FA the EPL and the Champions Cup coverage over here as well as Bundesliga matches.
Haven't posted because it really is a Europe deal but I enjoy seeing the games.

in the UK football news has been very negative here over the las 6 months, - FIFA farce, continual negativity from Chelsea, Man U and now Arsenal..... and also the legal case of Alan Johnson and Sunderland’s pathetic initial way of dealing with it. All examples of the ruin from money to the game.

- a great shame given the excellent form of Leicester.

Re: The Football Topic

Read this report today

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-35931031

It has been known about for some time already. Yes, there is human exploitation in every corner of the earth, but football is sport that touches so many of us and we have the power to do something about it.

The Qatar World Cup is still some years away. It should never have been awarded to Qatar and the fact that it is being constructed on the backs of slave workers is just so abhorrent.

Every nation should already state they will boycott it. Pure and simple. The English FA should state now that should they qualify they will not send a team.

At some point enough has to be enough. If FIFA has a single shred of decency left it should strip Qatar of the competition now.
