Topic: Davy Knowles

WOW WOW WOW! Just got back from the city seeing Davy Knowles play at this small little club. $10 a ticket, and it quite honestly was the best 10 dollars I spent all year! I was searching the concerts that were in town a few days ago and noticed he was playing a place called Martyrs in Chicago and decided to make a date of it with a friend! I only watched one video on YouTube, which coincidently was Natasha's from the forum haha, because I wanted to go into it and form my own opinion. I was so impressed and he has a new fan most definitely!

I highly recommend everyone check this guy out. Class all around! He even brought a fiddle player up and played Jack a Roe by Grateful Dead! He did mention that they were recording this show, so maybe a live cd will be released? Here's to hoping! Also noticed quite a lot of young people in the crowd. The age demographic was 20's to 30's for the majority. It was cool! Here are a few vids I recorded!

Re: Davy Knowles

We first caught wind of Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam back in 2008. His tone started like blues-rock, then it went to (what I would call) adult contemporary-like pop-blues-rock, then he started touring with jam-band like outfits. He's been laying low in Chicago the past few years... He's been endorsed by Paul Reed Smith since around 2009 if I remember correctly.

Very nice guy, met him three or so times. Also got to meet his GF and his dad, lol.

Re: Davy Knowles

Yeah Nic, he had three paul reed smiths up there with him. One had one pickup and reminded me of Joe's bona bird with one pickup on it. He definitely had some jam band in him, which I loved! Seemed like the nicest guy too! His fiancee kept bringing him tea while he was playing..it was sweet lol All around awesome show! I actually just ordered his live dvd and a cd smile

He caught the "jam" bug when Back Door Slam toured as Gov't Mules opening act years ago. I was his tea runner at a gig in SF back in '07 before Amber came into the picture and moved him into the Windy City. Back Door Slams first CD is a must have if you're diggin' Davy's sound. He was on a meteoric rise opening for Jeff Beck, Chickenfoot, Gov't Mule among others then releasing Coming Up For Air with Peter Frampton working with him and then......it all leveled off and he ended up needing a kickstarter program to cut his latest effort. It surprises me that no label hasn't picked him up. He's a great player and a genuinely nice kid well guy now. He was all of 19 when I first met him and had to wait 2 years to buy him a beer here in Ca. We miss him in the Bay Area where he used to play a couple times a year, he had a strong core following that I'd run into at every gig. The PRS' are nice and the endorsement deal is sweet too, but he used to make his blue Strat scream!

Re: Davy Knowles

Davy just put on 2 fantastic nights of music at the Iridium in NY. On the first night he had Nicky Moroch sit on a few songs and man did they do some great jamming together. The show that night went on a bit longer because of the extra soloing. The first night we sat right in front of the stage which is cool because you are so close and you feel a part of the whole thing, yet for filming it's a bit of a strange angle because you are basically looking up their noses and I couldn't really see the keyboard player very well. The second night we sat towards the back which is raised a bit. Nice view of the whole stage, yet there were some people near us who wouldn't stop talking and then you get the servers walking back and forth in the view as well. There is no ideal location unfortunately. The set list for the second night had quite a bit of variety to it and included some newer songs we had never heard before. The band he had with him were his four piece group he plays with in Chicago, plus a fiddle player who sat in on a few songs. Had a great time at the shows and was wonderful to talk with Davy afterwards. He is such an unbelievably nice guy, so humble and so sweet and such a fantastic guitar player and singer. He kept thanking me for doing the videos because he said it really helps get him exposure. How can you not love this guy smile

Re: Davy Knowles

In Davy's most current newsletter he discusses the stories behind two of the new songs he played at his recent shows in NYC. An interesting read.

Re: Davy Knowles

Yep -- we got our tix for the festival under da' Bridge; should be a great two days... let's hope Mother Nature is kind to us all.  I've never heard Knowles before, so I appreciate the link to his website -- but what a rabbithole that was!

I saw that he is performing north of Chicago (where we will be to see JOE on Thursday!), but the venue has the event listed as a "private party"; a burlesque/comedy/magic venue, for the most part -- interesting...

So, it looks like we're back to our original Friday night plan, to see Bobby Rush down at Buddy Guy's club.  I guess that's best, as Rush and I are from the same rich soil, and this Knowles kid will be around a LOT longer than either of us!  Besides, I get to hear both of these gentlemen at the Chessy Fest in just a few weeks.

Eager to hear the young upstart, Jarekus Singleton, too.  Interesting back story -- had it not been for an unfortunate foot injury, this guy would very likely be in the NBA today, instead of on that festival stage!

Are there any forum fellows out there attending Joe's Chicago show on Thursday???  Let's get a pre-show venue goin'...

Re: Davy Knowles

Saw Davy Knowles this Sunday in Sellersville, PA. Incredible show and I don't think I've been witness to such a respectful audience in I don't know how long. Standing and cheering when appropriate and quite as a mouse listening attentively at all the right times. The sound was incredible, only issue was the lighting. Extremely dark on stage and had to lighten the videos after processing. It was kind of an emotional show. You could tell Davy is still having a hard time dealing with the sudden death of his father and when he dedicated "Roll Away" to him and started playing I couldn't stop myself from crying. Poor guy, you could even see him turn and wipe a tear away from his eye after the song. He played it during a small acoustic portion of the show in which he did 4 songs. On the encore he did "The Thrill Is Gone" & "Outside Woman Blues" and was joined by Nick Cianci, a young guy who opened the show. It was great seeing them play together and you could tell Nick was so happy to be playing with ones of his heroes. Davy had no keyboardist on this tour which in a way was kind of cool because as a power trio he had to carry all the solos. And I love Davy's solos. So happy we decided to make the drive. Davy is always worth it smile

Re: Davy Knowles

I went to see Davy last night in Cambridge, MA at a cool little venue called The Sinclair.  With everything I had going on this week I almost didn't go, but I am so glad that I did.  Set list was similar to what Natasha saw, although we did get Cortez (I could listen to that one for days on end either by Neil, Mule or Davy). I did great except for Roll Away-that song always makes me cry anyways but last night I really felt it - cried and sang it all the way thru. I talked to Davy briefly after the show - offered him condolences for his Dad, then told him about my husband and we both had a mini-meltdown - Davy is such a nice and sweet person.  Told him not to take such a long vacation the next time - he is as good if not better than years ago.  Great way to start my healing process.  I took a bunch of pictures but won't be able to get to them for a while.

Re: Davy Knowles

Davy is so laid back, he is fun to see, HUGE fan for a few years now, fame wont change him......those were the days back then, catching Joe at some small little club in the Sierra Foothills, and Davy in San Francisco with a bar with a 20 person seating capacity a few days later....who says that $10 seats don't exist!
