Topic: Matthew Curry & the Fury

I am not associated with him or his band, but he's a local kid and his talent is off the charts.  My wife and I saw him last night and he captivated the audience just as JB does.  He's only 19, he just graduated HS in '13 and he is opening up for Peter Frampton, the Doobie Bros., this summer.

And to top it all off, he's as grounded as anyone.  Just a really, really nice kid.

His latest CD is amazing, Electric Religion.  He scorches the guitar and his band is spot on.  Just a great blues album, all originals.  Oh, and his voice is amazingly mature for his young age.  A great combination, IMO.

Re: Matthew Curry & the Fury

Very cool! Going to have to check him out. I love hearing about new artists on the rise! At 19 that's pretty impressive to be opening for Frampton and the Doobie Bros! Thanks for the heads up X!

Re: Matthew Curry & the Fury

After seeing somebody post this in the Play The Blues Cruise thread I checked into him. I have him coming to OKC in August. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Matthew Curry & the Fury

From Matthew's Facebook page, he reposted Peter Frampton's status after yesterday's show in Cincinnati:

I must also mention Mathew Curry who is opening for us on these dates. He wowed us all!! I see a big future for Mathew.
Someone asked me in an interview today if I thought there could be anymore guitar heros. Well, hell yes of course and Mathew is one who will prove that to be true.

If I am not mistaken, Peter Frampton has also taken Davy Knowles under his wing in recent years.

Re: Matthew Curry & the Fury

joe also was on a tour with Frampton in 2003. He said that was one of the best opening slots he ever had. I have heard good things about Mathew's maturity and his character that sounds a lot like Joe's.  I will see for myself in August.

I'll be very interested to hear your thoughts after you see him in August.

Re: Matthew Curry & the Fury

I just saw Matthew reently on April 26th at a small club here in Denver.  I had not heard him prior to attending ( I was invited by a friend pretty much last minute) and I definitely left the show a huge fan.  His show was fantastic and he was very interactive, accessible, and friendly with everyone after the show.  I am hoping he is back in the vicinity soon.  I feel very fortunate to have caught him in an intimate setting as I don't think that will last for long based on his talent and the buzz/exposure he appears to be garnering.  I would not hesitate to see him again and would highly recommend catching him if you can.

OK. Mathew played OKC tonight. I had high expectations and for good reason. I saw some of the Youtube footage but again the live show is the true test. Scary good on the guitar. Beyond his years. Influenced by Joe but more early Joe. His voice is not of a nineteen year old. His voice is much older. His material is amazingly good for a young man. Probably the best pure talent I have seen since I first saw Joe in 2002. Joe was 25 Mathew is 19 so give Mathew 6 years and who knows. I'll just say this. If this other artist section is meant to share new talent that those of us who dig Joe and we want to find artists that touch that same emotion that Joe touches this kid has it. He is a few years from hitting his full stride but he is with out a doubt a talent that we will see more of in the near future.

Great write up!!  Thanks for sharing, I'm glad that you enjoyed the show.  You and I see the same talent and potential in him.  He's from my hometown and we are very proud to call him our own.  smile

We'll be seeing him again in two weeks at the Illinois Blues Festival opening up for Robert Cray.  I'm looking very forward to it.

That would be very cool!!  We are only going to be there on Friday to see Matthew and Robert Cray.  The chances are good that you can find me either sitting close to the stage or standing in the beer line.  That’s typically my radius.  smile

Re: Matthew Curry & the Fury

Awesome i'll keep a look out!! smile

Re: Matthew Curry & the Fury

Saw Matthew at the Illinois Blues Festival last night.  Once again he was outstanding, put on a fantastic show.  He's an incredibly talented artist and he has a very bright future.  And his band is very talented as well.

Re: Matthew Curry & the Fury

Agreed with the above ^ Got to see him last night as well and I was so pleasantly surprised at this talent. You would never guess he is so young because he plays extremely well and his voice is so mature. I will definitely be following him from now on!
