I never heard SW's interview and don't really care (much ado about nothing, IMO), but there was an interesting article in the Chicago Sun-Times today. It basically said that SW's has always been pretty full of himself, and that the skills of a caddie were overrated in terms of their influence on winning a tournament. Everybody out there knows the yardage within inches, everyone knows which way the greens break, and that the caddies biggest challenge is carrying a heavy bag in extreme heat.
The writer basically said SW's was full of himself and for him to act as though he had anything to do with beating TW's was bullspit AND was insulting to Adam Scott.
The author of the article caddied for a long time and said he knew what he was talking about.

I never caddied, but I have to agree.

Bill - Have you ever looked up the words jealous or jealousy?  That writer is practically oozing it.  I 100% disagree with him and will say with absolute certainity that a professional's caddie figures alot more than someone carrying a bag in the heat.  Those comments are pathetic.

I never detected the jealousy thing, but maybe it's there. Im not trying to criticize caddies, but as far as I'm concerned, as long as the caddie is not swinging a club, he's a minor impact at best. When Tiger or Jack were at their peaks, I'm guessing they would have won with ME carrying their bag, lol.

I watch a lot of sports shows, especially Around the Horn and PTI on ESPN. Almost all of them agree that Stevie is basically a jerk. Tiger made him, not vice versa. He made some 10 million dollars working for Tiger. He just needs to shut his mouth and caddy, and yeah it's not that hard of a job especially when your guy is #1 in the world. Adam Scott won't put up with it for too long. I set the over/under for him caddying for Adam at 7 more tournaments, he'll figure a way to talk himself out of that job.
Are we ready for some football...er, yeah I meant golf that is. PGA here we come, last chance this year for an American to take a major. Go Phil, but I'll pull for Ricky Fowler again. He is overdue for a win somewhere.

Tres

I don't pay attention to sports "personalities" especially loons from Around The Horn, PTI or ESPN.  Those guys are paid to create issues for the ratings and I don't consider them what we once called reporters.
If Steve Williams has issues with Tiger than that's between him and his ex boss.  If you think caddying for someone with an ego the size of Rhode Island is easy than I suggest maybe you try it sometime.  Does anybody have a tape of Williams saying he made Tiger?  I'll bet no cause that'd be the last thing any employee would say about his last employer unless he planned to retire the next day.  I'm sure Adam Scott is quite happy to have Stevie on the bag and will take you up on your  over/under seven week offer.  I'll bet say one cd of our choice and double down Williams is his caddy the start of next season.  The clock's ticking Tres.........

some are personalities, many others are respected reporters and writers for other publications. But when nearly all of them agree on Steve's reputation on tour, I do listen because they in turn have access to people in the know that are affiliated with the PGA. Michael Smith, Woody Paige, Tony K, Wilbon and others do this for a living, when they agree it's tough to ignore. Anyway, it's 7 tournaments and NOT 7 weeks, and you are on for the bet.

Tres,

First thanks for the clarification and acceptance of the bet.  I'm pretty sure I'll win.

As for poor Stevie's reputation, I think you have to consider that Tiger's relationship with the press has always been at arms length and oftentimes that arm has been Steve Williams.  Don't ya think your honorable know-it-alls might have an axe to grind?  All your so-called credible reporters want a piece of Woods, more then than now, but he is still THE story as long as he laces up his Nikes.  Since Tiger's dad passed away I'll bet that Steve was way more to him than just his caddy.  When Williams took the bag for Scott at the US Open Tiger viewed it as disloyalty.  Never mind that Williams' livelihood had been put on hold for a year and a half while Tiger sorted through the tabloid headlines.  In Woods' mind Steve had betrayed him.  In Williams' mind he was just trying to stay busy and help out a fellow Aussie/New Zealander.  When Tiger dumped his arse like he did Fluff's Williams reaction at first was the high road, but those "credible" pundits wanted to make a story of it he had to defend his reputation.
Does Steve Williams have a big ego?  That's a no brainer, but I doubt any of us would throw him under the bus (like TW did) because he took pride in his profession.

Well said curby! TW crashes out of another tournament .... didn't even make the cut!

They say 95% of the game is between the ears. TW's not the only good player to miss the cut this time. He has great company!

Congrats to Mr. McIlroy. This also could be put in things that make me smile. His dad along with 3 friends, recognizing talent when they saw it, placed a bet 10 years ago that he would be British Champion by the time he was 25. He is 25 and the bet will pay off. The bet? 100 pounds each for 400 pounds at 50 to 1 odds. Nice payday! smile

I heard about this, nice payday is right!!

I was hoping Rory would win, of course, when Phil was out of it.
Some would call me a turncoat, I'd cheer for Rory any day over Tiger!

Way to go Angela!  smile

Much has also been said about Rory's recent split from his ex-fiancée, Danish Tennis Player, Caroline Wozniacki - I still think, he was mad to call their wedding off, just days before it was to take place - Rory broke her heart badly.  Still, it doesn't seem to have affected their respective professional careers. It just so happened, Caroline also won a tournament this weekend!
Congrats to both, Rory and Caroline!

Jeez!! Sergio shoots 61 to tie the course record at Firestone...including 8 under on the back nine alone!! Former record for the back nine was 29, Sergio shoots 27 and crushes the record. Wow!

Re: The Golf Soapbox

this is a beautiful course at Valhalla and some surprises in round 1. hate to see Kooch have to withdraw, hope he can get the back fixed in time for Ryder Cup. Lee Westwood is known for being streaky, could be in it come Sunday. Biggest surprises of the day are Bernd Weisberger and Ryan Palmer on the good side, Duff and Angel Cabrera on the bad side. I really didn't figure Tiger would make the cut, not a big deal all things considered. will continue to pull for Bubba, and Russel Henley.

Re: The Golf Soapbox

Saturday was THE most exciting round of golf I've seen in years. So many of the new wave of players grouped at the top. Oh yeah Rick, and Lefty too! Can't wait for the final round tomorrow and would love to see Rory & Ricky shoot it out for the title. Too bad Ricky isn't paired with Rory, but he and Phil are good friends and that may prove just as interesting!

As good a match as you could hope for with the luck of the bounce in play down to the wire. Lefty came up just short. Congrats to the kid.

Wow! Congrats to Rory!! The last time i looked, Rory was down by 3 shots - maybe it wasn't to be ...  Then to learn, this morning Rory had clawed his way back on top again!
I can't wait for the Ryder Cup to come around again!
