Topic: Sioux City, IA 4/17/14

The first stop on Joe's swing through Iowa happened tonight, at the wonderful Orpheum Theater in Sioux City. It's just the sort of old-school venue Joe thrives in. It also has a very cool marquee: http://tinyurl.com/q7uttjm

Before I say anything else, I can't help bragging about my seat. This photo was taken from a seated position in that very spot: http://tinyurl.com/pa669ph

Eat your hearts out, suckas!  wink  Of course, this location would prove to be problematic for me (more on that below)...

It was great to see Patty again, and great to finally meet so many forum regulars face-to-face. I'm sorry I wasn't at my best for you guys (I couldn't stand up much, unfortunately; I couldn't take my Vicodin because I was driving later, so I was in a fair amount of pain most of the evening). Perhaps Des Moines will be better. But in any event, I am hopeful that most of those folks will share their thoughts in this thread, too...

Not a lot to add to what I wrote about the Omaha show last week, but a few things worth noting:

  • I meant to mention this in the Omaha review, but it was a little odd not hearing “2 Minutes to Midnight” before the show began. What you get instead (separate intros for the acoustic and electric sets) is delightful, though, and I won't spoil the surprise for anyone here...

  • Set list was the same as for the Omaha show. My “fabulous fake” set list here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/52889850@ … otostream/

  • From the stage right side, I got much more of Gerry and Derek this time. Being so close to Gerry, in particular, was stirring...there's just something about an Irishman with a fiddle, I guess...  wink   Good thing everyone was looking at the stage during Driving Towards the Daylight, lest they see me blubbering like a little kid...

  • My seating position created an even bigger problem at the outset of the electric set. The CC copy of The Babe is now haunting my dreams visually as well as aurally. Joe stood close enough to me during Dust Bowl that I could have played with the Bigsby myself...I guarantee you, if I hit the Powerball, the picture of me they run in all the newspapers will have me posing with one of those...  big_smile

  • Bona-Byrd II really ought to be registered with the appropriate authorities as a lethal weapon.

  • It might be early onset Alzheimer's, but I think the Strat Joe played in Omaha was a tobacco sunburst; the one tonight was a medium blue (Lake Placid, maybe?)...

  • "Hear Spot. Hear Spot play. Sustain, Spot, sustain! (Pause) OMFG, Spot...."  :pray

Now it's on to Des Moines! I'm on the Meet & Greet list for that one, and this time I won't forget the gravy...or the autograph!  lol (Sorry, that's sort of an "inside joke" for long-time readers...)

Thanks Barbie! Here are two more before we get on the road to Des Moines. Have to say the lighting was really great for these shows. Maybe the fog machine helped.

No need to raise any points of contention, that article is just a plain fun read.  Thanks.  Nobody's watching corn grow in Iowa this week...

Great review Coach and nice to officially meet you!
Nice theatre, very intimate, smaller stage which meant Joe was almost within arms reach from our front row center left seats. Joe played many of his simply off-the-charts solos right in front of us! The new songs, "Oh Beautiful" and "Love Ain't A Love Song" are two of Joe's best in my opinion - completely different from one another, yet completely Joe! I love how the old songs have been rearranged slightly, making the whole set sound fresh.
I think the lighting is the best of any tour Joe has put together, well thought out and well executed. Sound is always such a subjective thing, and my perception is sure to be different because I always wear custom fit "musicians" earplugs, but the sound from my front row seat with a stage fill speaker directly in front of me was nothing short of perfect! Joe' vocals were absolutely clear as could be and perfectly mixed with whatever instruments were playing.
I also have to mention the wonderful gesture by Joe coming to the edge of the stage and handing a pick to both Patty and Renee, Carmine for the hugs and Tal for the sticks - these guys are just the best!

Re: Sioux City, IA 4/17/14

Nmagcorn - I'm pretty sure we sat right behind you last night! It was another amazing show! The Orpheum Theater is beautiful! I am amazed at the number of empty seats there - I have never seen that at a Joe show!

Sloe Gin http://youtu.be/zAJQdT_ArXU

With the solo very up close and personal smile If he had gotten any closer he would have been in Patty's lap wink

Re: Sioux City, IA 4/17/14

Looks like he was in your lap so to speak, great to see this
