Topic: If Heartaches Were Nickels

I'm attempting to work out the chord sequence behind If Heartaches Were Nickels and I'm a little stumped.

The CD version (to my ear) sounds like it's using G#, C# and D# but from the live video on YouTube it looks like he's playing in A (which could very well be A down a half step). When playing the G# version my bridge doesn't sound right, but against the live version the little bridge (A B C D B) sounds okay.

Can anyone untwist my brain?

Re: If Heartaches Were Nickels

I think it's pretty safe to say that the song is tuned down a half step, or the recording is a little slow. Not many rock musicians (especially a guitar player) would write a song in G#.  You lose all your first position/open string options.

Re: If Heartaches Were Nickels

Yeah it is tuned down a half step.

Intro - Dm Am D Eb E
Verse - Am Dm Am Dm Am Dm7 Am Am/G# Am/G F#7b5 Fmaj 7 D5 C/E Fsus2 G5
Bridge - Dm7 Am Dm7 d#5 E5Am Gass4/B C Dm C/E C D F9 E9 Am Dm Am D Eb E
Solo

Etc etc etc

I think I've got sun stroke.

Hi
I've just finished a cover of this and I played it in Ab (G# if you prefer!) and I found the scales just as straightforward and nice when you get to the end of the 'Zeppelin-esque run to hit a huge Emaj.

You can check my version out here: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7645476

Cheers
Chris.

Re: If Heartaches Were Nickels

I figured out the live version the other day its really simple.
I will post a video of me playing it soon

Re: If Heartaches Were Nickels

Further to InspiredbyJB's summary, who's more or less nailed it, it works well if you play the intro and the first part of the verse through the first chromatic run with the Am barred at the 5th fret then going to F at the first fret for the rest of it.
